Greetings and blessings,
I reply to your letter of Monday of Parshas Lech Lecha, in which you describe to me the situation of the elderly Chassid, who fears Hashem, Rav... You solicit my opinion regarding the two possibilities that are open to him, that of dwelling near the synagogue or else in the same house as his two daughters, although there is no synagogue in the vicinity.
At his age, it is important that he find himself among men, all the more as he has always had this habit. The first possibility therefore seems to me to be the one to choose, and it is fitting to find him a house near the synagogue. You shall also strive that the other conditions and the vigilance that is necessary toward him be likewise gathered.
You will kindly transmit to... my warm wishes that he may have a long life and good years, in the most literal sense, that is to say, with the tranquility of body and spirit, and also in the sense that our Sages give to this term, emphasizing that "there is no good but the Torah" and the mitzvah*, so that your days and your years be filled with Torah and mitzvos*.
In his Hilchos Deos, the Rambam explains the principle according to which "in all your ways, know Him." The Tur and Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, chapter 231, also cite it. Each instant of the life of a man may therefore be filled with Torah and mitzvos, which are the true good.

במענה על מכתבו מיום ב' לס' לך, בו מתאר מצב הישיש הוו"ח אי"א וכו' ר'... שי' ושואל חוות דעתי בנוגע הב' ברירות שיש לו, או לדור אצל ביהכ"נ או בבית ששם דרות שתי בנותיו אבל אין שם בית כנסת בסביבה"
הנה בגיל שלו חשוב הוא שיהי' בין אנשים ובפרט שהורגל לזה מעודו, ולכן נראה לי הסבר[א] הראשונה, היינו שימצאו לו דירה מתאמת סמוך לבית הכנסת וישתדלו אשר גם שאר התנאים בענין ההשגחה עליו וכו' יהיו ג"כ באופן המתאים בשבילו.
ומטובו למסור ל... שי' איחולי הלבביים לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות, טובות כפשוטו ממש, היינו במנוחת הנפש ומנוחת הגוף, וטובות כדרשת רז"ל כי אין טוב אלא תורה ומצוה, היינו שיהיו ימיו ושנותיו ממולאים בתורה ומצוות. ועל פי מה שפירש הרמב"ם ז"ל בהל' דיעות בענין בכל דרכיך דעהו, והובא ג"כ בטושו"ע או"ח סי' רלא, הנה מובן אשר כל רגע ורגע מזמן חיי האדם יכול להיות ממולא בתורה ומצוות שהם טוב אמתי.
