Igrot Kodesh · Letter 124 — Military Chaplaincy and Sacred Mission

I greet you and bless you,

You have no doubt received, in their time, all the publications we have sent you and we are convinced that they are very useful to you, to strengthen the spirit of the Torah and of Judaism among the soldiers, as well as to strengthen their morale and their confidence.

It is quite clear that we are prepared to help you, at any time and to the full extent of our means, to carry out these activities and, if the occasion arises, you will not fail to let us know.

A holy mission falls upon you, that of being the spiritual guide of all the soldiers who are under your responsibility. You must encourage them, so that they have good morale, are convinced of the final victory and do not fear the enemy. One must encourage them to strengthen themselves in their faith and in their convictions, to put into practice, to the extent of their ability, the Torah and the Mitzvos. Indeed, Hashem, the L-rd of hosts, is among them, protects them always and observes all their actions. Their camp must therefore be holy.

The Torah of Moshe* says that "when you go out to war against your enemy, you shall guard yourself from every negative element, for Hashem your L-rd is in your camp, to save you and to place your enemy in your hand. Your camp shall therefore be holy."

It says further [2]: "When you approach the front, the Kohen* shall stand and speak to the people. He shall say to them: Hear O Israel, you are going today to battle against your enemy. Your heart shall not weaken, you shall not be afraid, shall not fear and shall not be terrified before him. For Hashem your L-rd accompanies you and fights your enemies for you, in order to save you."

We have good hope that you are investing all your strength in the mission entrusted to you. If this is the case, you will see, without the shadow of a doubt, the positive fruit of your efforts. For, the heart of a Jew is always awake for his faith. It suffices that someone come to encourage him, to remind him of the necessity of fulfilling the Mitzvos as they are defined by the Torah.

With all our heart, we wish you great success in the accomplishment of this mission.

With our blessing of complete and imminent victory, of complete deliverance for all the children of Israel, through our righteous Moshiach.

שלום וברכה!

בודאי קבל בשעתו את כל העניני דפוס אשר שלחנו לו ובטוחים אנו אשר מביאים הם תועלת רבה בפרט בחזוק רוח התורה והיהדות בין אנשי החיל ובאימוץ רוחם וחוזק בטחונם בכלל.

ומאליו מובן, אשר עומדים אנו הכן בכל עת לעזור לו בכל הנ"ל ככל יכולתנו ובודאי יודיענו אם תהי' הזדמנות לזה.

עבודת הקודש הועמסה עליו להיות מנהיג רוחני ומורה דרך לכל בני הצבא הנמצאים תחת השפעתו: הן לעודד את רוחם שיהיו חזקים בבטחונם בנצחון גמור ואל יערצו מפני האויב הן לעוררם שיהיו תקיפים באמונתם ודתם ושישתדלו בכל תוקף בקיום התורה והמצות ככל יכולתם וכל אפשריותם, כי ד' אלקי הצבאות נמצא בקרבם משגיח עליהם תמיד ומתבונן בכל מעשיהם ולכן - והי' מחנם קדוש.

וכמסופר בתורת משה (דברים כג, י-טו): כי תצא מחנה על אויבך ונשמרת מכל דבר רע - כי ד' אלקיך מתהלך בקרב מחניך להצילך ולתת אויבך לפניך והי' מחניך קדוש.

ועוד שם (כ, ב-ד): והי' כקרבכם אל המלחמה ונגש הכהן ודבר אל העם ואמר אליהם שמע ישראל אתם קרבים היום למלחמה על אויבכם אל ירך לבבכם אל תיראו ואל תחפזו ואל תערצו מפניהם כי ד' אלקיכם ההולך עמכם להלחם לכם עם עויבכם להושיע אתכם.

תקותנו חזקה אשר משתדל באבודתו ככל יכלתו, ואז, בלי ספק, רואה הוא פרי רב בעמלו, כי לב בן ישראל תמיד ער הוא אם רק נמצא המעוררו על דתו ואמונתו ומזכירו על קיום המצות ככל הכתוב בתורה.

ומקול"ע הננו מאחלים לו הצלחה רבה במלוי תפקידו זה.

בברכת נצחון גמור בקרוב וגאולה שלמה לכל בנ"י ע"י משיח צדקנו.
