Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1239 — Health
Volume 5 · Letter 17 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
B'ezras Hashem,
15 Marcheshvan 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Moshe HaKohen Shayevitz[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received with satisfaction your letter of Sunday of Parshas Lech Lecha, with your contribution to the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch and to Kehot Publications, which was enclosed therewith. I send you the corresponding receipts.
I have good hope that you will give me good news of your state of health and of that of your wife, as well as of your positive accomplishments, in the communal domain. Our Sages emphasize that "there is no good but the Torah." An accomplishment is therefore positive if it provokes a better appreciation of the Torah, for oneself or for those around one, or at least is at the origin of this better appreciation.
The Torah is "longer than the earth," and the better appreciation of the Torah therefore has no limit. Our Sages emphasize that one multiplies tenfold the brachos* for him who multiplies his efforts. An increased activity in this domain shall therefore add to you strength and vigor, as well as the will and the desire to pursue, to develop your actions, qualitatively and quantitatively.
This is the case, not only for Torah, but also for all the acts that are linked to kedushah*. With regard to it, an established principle states that one increases one's commitment, but one does not diminish it. And, according to various opinions, this principle is instituted by the Torah itself[2].
What has just been said shall permit us to understand a story[3] that I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe. He related that his father[4], aged four or five years, entered, on the day of his birthday, the 20th of Cheshvan[5], the room of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in order to obtain his brachah*.
The Parshah of the week was then Vayeira and, as soon as he arrived, he began to weep. The Tzemach Tzedek asked him the reason. He explained that the Parshah of the week related how the Holy One, blessed be He, had revealed Himself to our father Avraham. He therefore wished that He would also reveal Himself to him. It is for this that he was weeping.
The Tzemach Tzedek replied to him: "When a Jew, a perfect tzaddik*, ninety-nine years old, knows that he must circumcise himself, he merits that Hashem reveal Himself to him."
In wishing you good health, as well as your wife,
