Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1237 — Teshuvah

Volume 5 · Letter 15 · 7 Mar’hechvan 5712

7 Marcheshvan 5712,

Brooklyn, New York,

As[1] has already been mentioned elsewhere, some emphasize[2] that a controversy opposes the Rambam and the Raavad to determine whether it is possible to renew and to augment one's knowledge, after having departed from this world. Nevertheless, various texts of Chassidus*[3], commenting on the verse "she who dwells in the gardens," speak of the heavenly yeshivah and show that the souls, in Gan Eden*, study Torah there.

One can, however, conceive both opinions, which, moreover, do not contradict the principle according to which "the Torah is not in heaven." Indeed, the essential object of the Torah[4] is to clarify a halachah* that was not known or imperfectly understood, due to the difficulty that it raises.

For this, the soul must descend into a body, compared to the skin of a serpent[5]. For all that, one can also conceive this same Torah in heaven[4], especially for the souls that have studied it during their physical life and which can thus, finding themselves in Gan Eden[6], perceive the spiritual dimension of the halachah. This possibility exists also for the angels, who "listen to your voice," but not the Torah itself[7], and who are changed, in function of what they listen to.

Concerning more specifically the author of this Chassidic discourse[8], I reproduce here an extract of a note by my father-in-law, the Rebbe:

"Monday 20 Marcheshvan,

Today is the date of birth of my father, the Rebbe, who was born on the Monday of Parshas Chayei Sarah, the twentieth day of the month of Marcheshvan, in 5621[9], at the ninth hour of the morning.

In a dream, I saw my father, the Rebbe, who was wearing his Shabbos garments, had a particularly joyous face. He said to me:

'During these twenty-four hours which are the eighty-fourth anniversary of the day that my soul descended into the lower world, I shall receive distinguished guests, and all our masters, in order, shall come to comment upon a verse of Psalm 84[10].'"

The text stops here, with regard to our subject.

This note was written in 5705[11], eighty-four years after the birth of the author of this text[12]. It was then that the relation between him and Psalm 84 was completed, in conformity with the custom of reading it that was instituted by the Baal Shem Tov*[13].

One can conclude from this that it remains possible to study and to hear the teaching of our masters, after they have departed from this world. And, the development of this study is subject to the dimension of time, here below.

Menachem Schneerson,

[1] This letter of the Rebbe was written as a foreword to a discourse of the Rebbe Rashab* that had just been edited. It figures in the Sefer HaMa'amarim 5680-1920, of the Rebbe Rashab.
[2] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Tzafnas Pa'aneach on the Rambam, Hilchos Teshuvah, chapter 8, paragraph 4, which refers to the assertion of our Sages according to which 'the Sages know no rest,' Yerushalmi Sheviis, chapter 4, paragraph 9, Tractates Bava Metzia 85b, Zevachim 14b, Kesubos 39a."
[3] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah, Parshas Tazria, Chassidic discourse entitled 'one discusses in the heavenly yeshivah,' Shir HaShirim, Chassidic discourse entitled 'to understand the heavenly revelation,' sequence of discourses Vechachah 5637, beginning at chapter 6, Kuntres Limud HaChassidus, beginning at chapter 11, and other references."
[4] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Beginning of the Likkutei Torah on three Parshiyos."
[5] The only animal that molts and divests itself of its skin, thus showing that it is not really part of itself, just as the soul does not fully identify with the body. The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Iggeres HaKodesh, chapter 26. One shall also consult the Kuntres Acharon, in the chapter entitled: To understand the detail of the halachos."
[6] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Sequence of Chassidic discourses entitled 'man must say a brachah' 5638, chapter 22."
[7] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See Torah Or Toldos, discourse entitled 'the many waters,' chapter 3, and the previously cited sequence of discourses."
[8] This is the Rebbe Rashab.
[9] 1860.
[10] Corresponding to the number of his years, since his physical birth, although he had already departed from this world.
[11] 1945.
[12] That of the discourse introduced by this letter.
[13] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the collection of letters on the Tehillim, end of page 214."
