To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Refoel Nachman HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to the questions that you posed to me in your letter.

A) It does not seem good to me to think, during Birkas Kohanim*, of someone who has already departed from this world. One can, on the other hand, read Tehillim for him[2] or recite verses, at the end of the Amidah*[3]. All depends on how attached one is to him and how one feels it.

B) The verses corresponding to the names Menachem and Mendel[4] are: "The light of the eyes gladdens the heart, and good news fattens the bone"; "How beautiful are your tents, Yaakov, your sanctuaries, Israel."

C) You write to me that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, indicated to you what one should think during Birkas Kohanim. I would be very grateful to you to specify this point to me.

D) I thank you very much for thinking of my name, when you say Birkas Kohanim. And, you observe, moreover, the word of our Sages according to which one who gives a gift[5] to his fellow must let him know about it. May there be realized for you, in a visible and tangible good, the promise of the Holy One, blessed be He, according to which "I shall bless them"[6], with interest exceeding the principal.

[2] Some Chassidim still read, every day, the Psalm corresponding to the number of years of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
[3] It is customary to read, at the end of the Amidah, a verse whose first and last letters correspond to the first and last letters of one's name. The Chassidim precede this verse with that of the Rebbe, and some also read the verse of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
[4] The name of the Rebbe. The Chassidim read these verses at the end of the Amidah.

במענה על שאלותיו במכתבו:

... לכוון בברכת כהנים למי שנסתלק כבר - לא נראה לי, משא"כ באמירת תהלים או הפסוקים בסיום השמו"ע - שזהו תלוי באופן ההתקשרות, הרגש הלב וכו'.

9ד הפסוקים לשם מ"מ הם: מאור עינים ישמח לב ושמועה טובה תדשן עצם, מה טובו אהליך יעקב משכנותיך ישראל.

ה) אסיר תודה אהי' לו אם יודיעני הכוונות בברכת כהנים שכתב לו (כפי שמזכיר במכתבו) כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר.

ואו) ת"ח ת"ח על שמכוון שמי בברכת כהנים, ועל קיומו מרז"ל, הנותן מתנה לחברו צריך להודיעו, ויה"ר שיקויים בו בטוב הנראה והנגלה הבטחת הקב"ה ואני אברכם, ובתוספתו שהיא מרובה על העיקר.

בברכת בריאות הנכונה לו ולזוגתו שיחיו, ורוב נחת מכל ילידיהם שיחיו.
