Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1226 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 3
"B'Shem Hashem*"[1],
Day after Yom Kippur 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
My father-in-law, the Rebbe, related: "Once, on the day after Yom Kippur, I went to see my father, and I asked him:
'What must one do now?'
He replied to me:
'Now[2], in particular[3], it is necessary to attain teshuvah*.'"
The days that separate Yom Kippur from Sukkos are joyous[4] and, a fortiori, the days of this festival proper.
There is here indeed an additional proof that the service of Hashem must be joyous[5], including when it is a matter of teshuvah, even though it would seem that it should inspire bitterness.
Likewise, conversely, one can conceive an immense joy by meditating upon the existence of teshuvah[6], upon the fact that nothing can resist it; one can, moreover, be animated by "the faith and the conviction that one can place in Hashem all his confidence, for He desires to do good, is good and merciful, multiplies pardon, from the moment that one solicits Him and without the slightest doubt"[7].
Concerning Rosh Hashanah and, in general, the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah*, our Sages emphasize that fear must not prevent one from rejoicing, as it is said: "Rejoice with trembling"[8]. How much more must this be the case between the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah and the festival of Sukkos, during the "z'man simchaseinu*" which is ours, the festival of Sukkos, and the other "z'man simchaseinu" which is Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah*. Certainly, the joy is, each time, different, and it emanates from another level[9], but, in all cases, it is particularly intense.
May Hashem grant that there be realized for us the promise according to which "Israel rejoices in his Maker"[10], so that "Hashem rejoices in His creatures"[11], very soon and truly in our days.
Menachem Schneerson,
[1] Thus is called the day after Yom Kippur. This letter was written as the introduction to the kuntres edited on the occasion of 13 Tishrei and the festival of Sukkos.
[2] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "One shall consult the commentators of the Mishnah, on Tractate Krisus, chapter 6, Mishnah 3, the Shaarei Teshuvah on the Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, chapter 1, paragraph 10, and other references that are cited by this text. This point shall not be treated here."
[3] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "The term 'in particular' may be interpreted in light of what is explained, by various texts, on the fact that we ask Hashem to forgive us, in prayer, after having read the Psalms preceding the recitation of the Shema Yisroel, then the Shema itself and its blessings. One shall consult, regarding this, the addenda to the Torah Or, Parshas Ki Sisa, and other references."
[4] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the Maharil, cited by the later Decisors, at the end of chapter 624."
[5] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Rambam, at the end of the Hilchos Lulav."
[6] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Indeed, there is a controversy among our Sages to determine whether the notion of teshuvah exists among non-Jews."
[7] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Midrash HaNe'elam, in the Zohar Chadash, end of Parshas Bereishis, the Rambam, Hilchos Teshuvah, end of chapter 3. See also the Yerushalmi, in Tractate Pe'ah, chapter 1, paragraph 1."
[8] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Iggeres HaTeshuvah, chapter 11."
[9] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "This is explained in the Likkutei Torah, Parshas Nitzavim, in the discourse entitled Sos Asis."
[10] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See also the Likkutei Torah, at the end of the second discourse entitled BeYom Shemini Atzeres."
[11] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah, in the discourse entitled Hashem Li B'Ozrai, beginning at chapter 3."
