Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1225 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 2 · To: grand Rav
B'ezras Hashem,
8 Tishrei 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the great Rav, Chassid who fears Hashem, great scholar, who arranges his study and comments upon it, filled with knowledge, Rav Meir[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I thank you very much for the precious gift, the two volumes of the Toras Chaim, which you sent to me. I hope that you will also send to the library the other seforim* of which you are the author.
You will find enclosed the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Chai Elul[2] and a copy of my letter addressed to all[3], which, doubtless, will interest you. By separate package, we are sending you the Chassidic discourses of the summer of 5700[4] and the Sefer HaSichos.
I address my brachah* to you, that you be definitively inscribed for a good year, in the course of which you may devote yourself to Torah with all your strength. Moreover, you shall instill in your community the Torah of life, that is to say, the one permeated with its profound dimension, with the "tree of life," according to the expression of the Zohar, vol. 3, page 124b.
The activities, in this period, are numerous and I therefore have little time. Nevertheless, I leafed through your seforim and I consulted, in particular, what concerns the present moment of the year, that is to say, the commentaries relating to teshuvah*. Consequently, I shall formulate here some remarks, even if they are not as developed as they should have been.
In your commentary on Parshiyos Vayeilech and Haazinu, you speak of the manner in which Teshuvah was consulted[5]. You doubtless know that there are several versions of this text, and you will see, regarding this, the text of the Yerushalmi, in Tractate Makkos, chapter 2, the Yalkut Shimoni on the Tehillim, at Psalm 25. The Vavei HaAmudim, by the son of the Shnei Luchos HaBris, cites a surprising version of it, based on what is said of the prophet Yechezkel. Concerning the manner in which Prophecy was consulted[5], he mentions a verse which, evidently, alludes to Wisdom[6]. The Yerushalmi, on the other hand, cites these verses in the contrary order, which seems more logical.
I have developed all this at length elsewhere, and I shall here briefly recall my point.
Wisdom was therefore questioned, and she replied: "Let evil pursue him who commits sins." Logically, one can understand this assertion by explaining that the sin naturally entails evil. And, in this reply, it is only a matter of evil, without further specification, for its quantitative and qualitative dimensions depend upon those of its cause, that is to say, of the sin.
Prophecy was also questioned, the object of which is to bind oneself to the Divine Presence. He who commits a sin, even inadvertently, deprives himself of this bond. Indeed, he who acts without awareness must also atone for his act. The reply of Prophecy was therefore the following: "Let the man who has committed a sin die." Indeed, the slightest transgression suffices to cut oneself off from the Divine Presence. You will consult, regarding this, the Moreh Nevuchim, vol. 2, beginning at chapter 34, which treats of prophecy.
The same question was put to the Torah, which says: "Let man offer a sacrifice of asham, and he shall be forgiven." The Torah, which is the Wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He, surpasses even Prophecy. This is the reason why the prophet does not introduce a new element[7]. And, the Torah therefore feels the lack[8] much more than Wisdom and Prophecy. From this point of view, death itself is not sufficient to bring atonement.
Nevertheless, the Torah is a Torah of kindness, and Hashem extends His hand to receive those who repent. He takes account of the fact that a man, when he commits a sin, is seized by a spirit of folly and acts like an animal. The Torah therefore introduces a means to redeem this sin, and this emphasizes that the man could have committed it only because he behaved like an animal. The sacrifice that must be brought is precisely that of asham, which encompasses all categories of sin, the one which one is not certain of having committed, the one which one did inadvertently, the one for which one acted in awareness. One could also develop other explanations.
The same question was also put to the Holy One, blessed be He[9]. Certainly, who, better than He, is conscious of the damage[8]? On the other hand, who would dictate to Him His conduct? And, "if your sins are many, what do you take from Him?" Hashem therefore asks man to awaken the part of his soul that rises above all calculation and, in this way, to attain teshuvah.
Teshuvah permits one to change, from one extreme to the other, so that, in the words of the Rambam, "He Who has knowledge of what is hidden may bear witness that he shall no longer commit this senseless act." Such a man provokes, for what concerns him, a transformation in the celestial spheres, from one extreme to the other. While he found himself in a deep pit, in which the defect that he had caused was particularly felt, he raises himself, thanks to teshuvah, to a lofty summit. Indeed, the level attained by those who realize teshuvah is inaccessible to the perfect tzaddikim*. We shall not say more here.
You question me about sins intentionally committed which are transformed into merits. You will find the corresponding explanation at the end of chapter 7 of the Tanya*.
Concerning the Torah and the mitzvos* performed by one who has committed a sin, you will consult the Hilchos Talmud Torah of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 4, paragraph 3.
I would like also to formulate a remark on the conclusion of your letter, according to which we have arrived at the "beginning of the redemption." May Hashem preserve us from saying and, a fortiori, from writing that the present situation, in our Holy Land, with regard to Jewish observance, is proof that we are at the beginning of the redemption. It is painful to say more, especially as all know well what is the case.
May Hashem therefore grant that we leave, very soon and in our days, this profound and intense darkness, in which one passes off shadow for light and light for shadow, and may our righteous Moshiach* deliver us, with all the people of Israel, outside of Eretz Yisroel as well as in the Holy Land, which shall be rebuilt and restored.
Thus, we shall leave this bitter exile and we shall know the complete and true geulah*.

[3] This is letter no. 1191.
[4] 1940, of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
[5] To give an opinion on what is fitting to do for the man who has acted wrongly.
[6] To which the same question was also put.
[7] But transmits only the terms of the prophecy that has been entrusted to him, while the scholar of Torah develops new explanations of it.
[8] Brought about by the man who has committed the sin.
[9] Whose reply was: "Such a man must do teshuvah."
