Greetings and blessings,

I receive, from time to time, news of your studies at the yeshivah. Certain details of your conduct give me satisfaction, but, even if everything were well, you know the saying of the Rebbe Maharash*, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, repeated many times: "If everything is indeed well, can one not aspire to better?" Moreover, it happens that, in this case, certain points concerning your conduct and your diligence in study could indeed be improved.

I would like to remind you here of the qualification that the Rebbe Rashab* gave to the talmidim* of the yeshivah. He called them Temimim*, those who are wholehearted. They must be "lights that illuminate." How much more must this be the case for those who are, in addition, sons of Temimim. Each of you must have engraved in his mind the immense responsibility that falls upon him. You must be an example for all the other talmidim of the yeshivah, who will imitate you, not only in the study of Chassidus* and the fervor of prayer, but also in the study of nigleh* of the Torah and in your attitude toward others.

I hope that these remarks, brief in quantity, will suffice to make you become aware of the truth and to help you understand why you find yourself at the yeshivah. Indeed, you are not there only for yourself. You must also exert a positive influence on those around you, be the model of what a yeshivah talmid represents, both through the deep aspect of your personality and through your outward appearance.

I await good news from you. You shall inform me that you have received this letter and that you have begun to put its terms concretely into practice, in a scrupulous manner.

שלום וברכה!

מזמן לזמן הנני מקבל ידיעות ע"ד לימודם בישיבת... ואף כי באיזה פרטים הנני שבע רצון מהנהגתם, אבל אם גם הכל הי' כדבעי למהוי, הנה ידוע פתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש נ"ע שחזר עליו כמה פעמים כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זיע"א "אז גוט איז גוט, איז בעסער ניט בעסער" ובפרט שבאיזה פרטים כנראה הנהגתם והתמדתם בלימוד צריכה עדוד וחזוק.

ובאתי בזה לעוררם ע"ד שם התואר שנתן כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע להתמימים, שהם צריכים להיות נרות להאיר. ואם כן בפשטות הוא שזהו צריך להיות בבני התמימים, ועל כל אחד ואחד מכם להיות חקוק בזכרונו, האחריות הגדולה המוטלת עליו, שהוא צריך לשמש מופת לכל שאר התלמידים הנמצאים בהישיבה, אשר ממנו יראו וכן יעשו, ולא לבד בלימוד החסידות ובעבודת התפלה, אלא ג"כ בלימוד הנגלה בכלל ובעניני דרך ארץ שבין אדם לחבירו.

אקוה אשר דבריי אלה המועטים בכמות, יספיק לעוררם ולהעמידם על האמת אשר תכלית בואם לישיבת... הוא לא רק לתועלת עצמם, אלא להשפיע ג"כ על הסביבה שלהם, לשמש דוגמא איך שבן ישיבה צריך להיות בפנימיות וגם בחיצוניות.

אחכה לבשורה טובה מהם מקבלת מכתבי זה, ואשר נגשו להביא את הענין בפועל ממש בכל הפרטים הנ"ל.
