B'ezras Hashem,

Third day of Selichos* 5711,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav I.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

You will find enclosed the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, and, as the foreword[2] says, you shall strive to study it with friends. It is in this manner that one can make the acquisition of Torah[3].

In fact, one speaks of "things" and not of "qualities" by which one "acquires Torah," as the beginning of this Chassidic discourse remarks. These "things" indeed imply humility and awareness of one's smallness. No one therefore has the right to think that such-and-such a friend would bring nothing to his study, that he is sufficient unto himself, much less that the other would disturb him[4].

May Hashem therefore grant that this study be acquired, in the spirit of those who will take part in it, that it bear their name[5], become their Torah, and, according to the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: "Not only has he learned Torah, but, even more, the Torah has taught him something."

My father-in-law, the Rebbe, related[6]: "My father had the custom of prolonging until after nightfall the Chassidic discourse that he delivered at the end of the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Thus, he introduced the brachos* of the forty-eight hours of this Yom Tov* into the world, so that the light of Chassidus* illuminate everything."

I propose therefore that everyone do the same and link the hours of Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of the following day[7] by studying Chassidus, by reason of the fact[8] that our masters opened the path for us to attain this. Thus, we shall introduce into every object, including the lowest, the light of Chassidus.

Wishing you and wishing myself to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

Menachem Mendel ben Chana Schneerson,

[1] This "collective-personal" letter was sent to several persons. See, regarding this, letter no. 481.
[2] The previous letter.
[3] The Rebbe notes: "Tractate Avos, ch. 6 Mishnah 6, and Midrash Shmuel, ibid."
[4] The Rebbe notes: "See the Chassidic discourse appearing in kuntres no. 89."
[5] The Rebbe notes: "Tractate Avodah Zarah 19a and the commentary of the Maharsha, ibid."
[6] The Rebbe notes: "The second day of Rosh Hashanah 5704."
[7] The Rebbe notes: "See Yerushalmi, Tractate Yoma, ch. 1 par. 1 and ch. 2 par. 1: It suffices to link the day and the night."
[8] The Rebbe notes: "The word bishvil ('by reason of') receives two explanations, according to Kesser Shem Tov, beginning of vol. 2, which cites the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov on the following affirmation of our Sages: the entire world is sustained on account of Chanina, my son."
