B'ezras Hashem,

23 Elul 5711,

To my close relative, the Tzaddik*, Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Yochanan[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 18 Elul, the month of mercy. As you know, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, related that this date is that of the birth of the Baal Shem Tov* and the Alter Rebbe*. This day is in itself auspicious, chai*[2].

Thus, this date vivifies all the domains of the avodas Hashem* of Elul — teshuvah*, Torah, tefillah*, and ma'asim tovim* — to which allusion is made, according to our holy seforim*, by the initial letters of the words constituting the following verses: "your heart and the heart of," "He guided his hand and I shall set you a place where he shall flee," "a man to his fellow and gifts to the poor," "Ani l'Dodi v'Dodi li*"[3]. All this was explained at length[4] in the sicha*, during the farbrengen* of Chai Elul.

On the occasion of the new year, which approaches, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I address my brachah* to you, as well as to the members of your family, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מח"י אלול, חדש הרחמים, ובטח ידוע לו מספור כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר זהו יום הולדת כ"ק מורנו הבעש"ט וכ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן, והאי יומא הוא דקגרים ח"י, שמכניס חיות בחדש אלול בכל סוגי העבודה דאלול, דתשובה תורה עבודה וגמ"ח וכנרמז בר"ת אלו"ל המובא בספה"ק, א ת ל בבך ו את ל בב, א נה ל ידו ו שמתי ל ך, א יש ל רעהו ו מתנות ל אביונים, א ני ל דודי ו דודי ל י, וכמבואר בארוכה בשיחת התועדות דח"י אלול.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולב"ב שיחיו ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
