Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1205 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 441 · To: grand Rav

B'ezras Hashem,

19 Elul 5711,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Asher[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter, and I beg you to excuse me for not yet having responded as I should have to your two latest letters, owing to my many occupations and the workload that falls upon me. In these days of goodness and mercy[2], you will surely forgive me.

I read with satisfaction, in your letter, the report of the efforts that have been and continue to be made, in order to acquire a building for the yeshivah*, in Melbourne. Finally, Hashem has granted you success and you have found a suitable building. With time, you will surely find the means to purchase it, and above all, may Hashem multiply your good talmidim*. When this essential point is obtained, you will also have what is secondary.

You ask me what name to give it[3]. If one is already assigned, there is no reason to change it. On the other hand, if you have not yet made any decision, and inasmuch as, at the beginning, it will be difficult for this institution to be able to satisfy all the demands of the Chassidim, I propose to call it Oholei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch[4]. Indeed, I strive, to the fullest extent possible, that the schools founded currently bear the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. For it is solely through his teaching that we live[5].

To create and develop a yeshivah in conformity with traditional values is an accomplishment of the highest importance.

That which has been consecrated is, from a certain point of view, more important than the agricultural levies, the terumah*, which is connected to the spiritual world of Beriah*, while that which is sacred thereby acquires a status of independence, as the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 94b, observes, thus connecting itself to the world of Atzilus*. It is for this reason that a level four times derived is defined only for that which is consecrated. This fourth level introduces the esoteric dimension of Torah. Among its four levels of interpretation, the fourth, that of Kabbalah*, is precisely connected to Atzilus.

The value of study based on the light and luminary of Torah, which is its deep teaching, has always been of inestimable value. This was the case when all was well, and it is verified even more clearly in this troubled period. Indeed, the Jews have been dispersed to points of the globe very distant from one another. The exhausting occupations and frightening troubles, compared to previous eras, have caused moral disappointment.

One must therefore desperately seek everything that is of a nature to reestablish unity, in particular in Torah. Certainly, "we all possess one Torah." Now, the unity of Torah appears much more clearly in its deep teaching, which contains no discussions, no controversies, in any case not as much as the revealed part of Torah.

At its source, the deep part of Torah belongs to the Etz Chaim* and not to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, as Iggeres HaKodesh* explains in chapter 26. One does not therefore find in it questions, divergences, as the Zohar and Iggeres HaKodesh make clear.

How much more so is this the case in this period of ikvesa diMeshicha*, with the approach of the end of our exile and the coming of our Righteous Moshiach*. It is therefore important to bring the light to a new place, especially if one gives it the luminary, source of the light.

I hope that Hashem will give you success, very soon, as the Chassidic discourse[6] edited for 12 Tammuz this year explains, according to which nature itself can be supernatural. The light shall therefore go on intensifying and the night shall be clear as day. Our Sages give us the assurance that those who adopt such an attitude will receive the merit of that which is public and will be blessed with all good, in all of their needs, for themselves and for all theirs.

You will greet the entire community and each of its members, in particular. All have made you their emissary to announce to me this good news. I therefore also express my brachah* through your intermediary, and I wish each one to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year.

M. Schneerson,

I enclose for you an excerpt[7] of the sicha* of Shabbos Mevarchim[8] Elul. You will disseminate it in the appropriate manner. I am also sending you a brochure on public activity which, undoubtedly, will interest you greatly.
