To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, of multiple knowledge, who devotes himself to communal needs, Rav S. Y.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of erev Shabbos Parshas Eikev. In the meantime, you have surely received mine, with the kuntres* of commentaries on Eichah*[2]. Subsequently, I had your letter of 26 Menachem Av, and I am enclosing a copy of the correspondence that I sent to Agudas Chassidei Chabad*[3]. I am somewhat concerned to note that you have not been participating, lately, in the activities of Agudas Chassidei Chabad in the Holy Land, but I reassure myself by saying that this is solely the consequence of your geographic distance.

Some time ago, the Piskei Dinim*[4] which have just been republished were sent to the Chief Rabbi[5] Herzog and to yourself. I have not obtained confirmation that you indeed received them. I do not know whether these books were lost or whether their delivery is simply delayed.

You no doubt know that I have been laboring, for some time, at the request of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to republish the Sdei Chemed. Baruch Hashem*, despite the expenses that result and the immense work that is necessary, we have managed to publish nine volumes to date, and I hope, after the Yamim Tovim*, to publish the tenth and final volume, in which are reproduced the will of the author, the kuntres Be'er BaSadeh, the Nitzchiyus Yosef, and especially the index that has been newly compiled, the list of subjects evoked and of authors. When it appears, I shall send you a copy, bli neder*.

I am very pained by the disunity among the Orthodox parties in the Holy Land, and especially by the fact that some of them place their interests before that of Orthodox Yiddishkeit* as a whole. You are on the spot, and it is therefore unnecessary to say more.

You wrote to me that the third volume of the Encyclopedia Talmudis is at the binders, and I rejoice in this. You are currently working on the fourth. I would have liked to have all these volumes in my library. Indeed, they are particularly useful to anyone who studies our holy Torah. It is unnecessary to say more, while I do not possess a single one of these works in my library.

You wonder, in your letter, why the Chassidim in Paris do not come to settle in the Holy Land. This is most likely explained by the letters and information they receive from their friends and relatives residing in the Kfar[6]. Lately, only a few of them have asked me whether they should settle there, and those, it seems to me, do indeed intend to do so.

I shall return to you, in these days, one of the two manuscripts.

קבלתי מכתבו מעש"ק פ' עקב, ובטח בינתיים הגיעו ג"כ מכתבי עם הקונט' דרשימות על מגילת איכה. כן בעתו קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ו מנ"א, ומוסג"פ העתק מכתבי לאגו"ח. דואג אני במקצת מה שבזמן האחרון אינני שומע מהשתתפות כת"ר בעבודת אגו"ח באה"ק ת"ו, אף שאני מרגיע את רוחי כי בודאי אין זה אלא מפני ריחוק המקום.

זה מזמן ששלחו להרב הראשי הרצוג שליט"א, וכן גם לכת"ר, את הפסקי דינים שהדפסנו מחדש, ועדיין לא נתקבל אישור על הקבלה. ואינני יודע אם נאבדו הספרים בדרך או שנתעכבו דרך הילוכם.

בטח ידוע לכת"ר שזה מזמן רב שהנני עוסק עפ"י הוראת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בהו"ל עוה"פ את השדי חמד. ות"ל אשר למרות ההוצאות העצומות שבדבר והטרחה המרובה ביותר כבר הוצאנו לאור ט' כרכים ותקותי שלאחר הימים-טובים יצא לאור גם הכרך האחרון הוא העשירי, הכולל בתוכו הצוואה של המחבר, קונטרס באר בשדה, נצחיות יוסף וכו', והעיקר מפתחות שנערכו מחדש, מפתחות ערכין, מפתחות מחברים וכו', וכשיצא לאור בל"נ יישלח לכת"ר.

מצטער אני במאד מפירוד הלבבות בין המפלגות החרדיות באה"ק ת"ו, והעיקר במה שכמה מהם מבכרים את הרווחים של המפלגה על חשבון ההפסד והיזק של היהדות החרדית בכללותה, וכו', ולכת"ר הנמצא על אתר האריכות בזה אך למותר...

שמחתי להידיעה במכתבו אשר הכרך השלישי של האנציקלופדי' כבר נמצא בכריכה, ועובד כת"ר עכשו על הכרך הרביעי. ומה מאד הייתי נהנה אם היו נמצאים בספרי' שלי כל הכרכים, אשר תועלת גדולה ביותר יש להם לכל אחד המתענין בתורתנו הק'. והאריכות בזה אך למותר, ועדיין אין בספרייתי אפי' כרך אחד.

תמה במכתבו מפני מה אין אנ"ש בפריז נוסעים לאה"ק ת"ו, וכנראה שהסיבה היא המכתבים והידיעות שמקבלים ממכיריהם וקרוביהם בכפר, כי במשך כל הזמן הרי רק אחדים בפו"מ שאלו אותי אם לנסוע לאה"ק ת"ו, וכנראה שאלה מתכוננים לעלות ארצה.

בימים אלו אחזיר לכת"ר אחד מהשני ביכלעך.
