Igrot Kodesh · Letter 120 — Outreach Infrastructure and Chanukah Education

To the distinguished Rav*, Rav I. Shapiro,

I greet you and bless you,

You have no doubt become aware of the activities of Machaneh Yisrael* and the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*, which were founded by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, and whose objectives are briefly presented in the enclosed pamphlets. We are sending you, under separate cover, some specimens of the modern brochures that the Merkaz publishes for the youth.

According to what we have been told concerning you, you can surely, with the help of Hashem, make an important contribution to the work of Machaneh Yisrael and the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch, in your city in general and among those whom you guide in particular. Thus, you yourself will have merit and you will cause the merit to be acquired by the greatest number.

Particular attention must be given to the dissemination of educational books, which are based on the purest tradition, among the widest circles of the youth, including those who, for the time being, are distanced from Jewish education.

I would be happy if we could correspond. Obviously, we are prepared to help you, with the help of Hashem, to the extent of our means, to undertake this task.

These days of Chanukah* [1] have as their essential obligation to publicize the miracle, precisely in the public domain, in the courtyard and specifically from sunset, by then lighting candles. This must surely awaken in us increased courage to set ourselves to the task.

The public domain is an open and wide place, in which everyone can advance and express their opinion, even if it goes against that of the Torah*.

The sunset alludes to a period in which the non-Jews and the Hellenist Jews allow themselves to ask: "Where is your Hashem?", of Whom it is said "Hashem is the sun and its shield" [2].

One must then light "the candle of Hashem (which) is the soul of man," buried within each one, including the one who commits a transgression. Indeed, "although he acts wrongly, he remains a Yisrael*" and one adds [3], from day to day, for "in the domain of holiness, one increases and does not diminish."

בטח שמע כת"ר מפעולותיהם של "מחנה ישראל" ושל ה"מרכז לעניני חנוך", אשר נתייסדו ע"י כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א, ואשר ראשי פרקים ע"ד מטרותיהם מובן מהגליונות המוסג"פ, ושולחים אנו לכת"ר בחבילה מיוחדת דוגמאות מהחוברות החדשיות לבני הנעורים היו"ל ע"י המרכז.

וכפי ששמענו ע"ד כת"ר, בטח יוכל בע"ה לפעול הרבה בעבודת "מחנה ישראל" וה"מרכז לעניני חנוך" בעירו בכלל, ובתוך הקרובים ביותר להשפעתו בפרט, ולהיות בזה מן הזוכים ומזכים את הרבים.

ומהראוי לתשומת לב ביותר הוא הפצת ספרי חנוך שהם על טהרת הקודש בין חוגי הנוער היותר רחבים אף שהם רחוקים, לע"ע, מחנוך כשר.

נשמח אם יעמד אתנו בחליפת מכתבים, ומובן מאליו, כי מוכנים אנו לעזר לו בע"ה בעבודתו הנ"ל במדת האפשרות.

ימי חנוכה האלו, אשר חובת היום הוא פרסומי ניסא ברה"ר (בחצר) דוקא ומשתשקע החמה דוקא ע"י הדלקת הנרות בודאי צריכים לעורר בנו אומץ נוסף לתעמולה לעבודה.

ברה"ר - מקום פרוץ ומפולש, מקום שכאו"א יש לו דריסת הרגל שם ומחווה דעתו, גם אם הוא היפך דעת תורה -

ומשתשקע החמה - זמן אשר הגוים, והמתיוונים מבני ישראל אומרים אי' אלקיכם שנאמר עליו כי שמש ומגן ד' אלקים -

עד שידליקו נר ד' נשמת אדם אשר בכאו"א מישראל, ואפילו החוטא וכו' הרי אע"פ שחטא ישראל הוא ומוסיפין והולכין מיום ליום כי מעלין בקדש ולא מורידין.
