Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1198 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 434 · To: jeune homme
B'ezras Hashem,
16 Elul 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the young man, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Shalom Dov[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter written at the conclusion of Shabbos, the 1st of Elul, in which you inform me that you are participating in the activity of "the association of those active in the camp of Torah"[2]. You say that your efforts are crowned with success, but the Orthodox community of the Holy Land does not respond to the call of this association as it should, and the entire workload therefore falls upon you.
It results from this that you are neglecting the study of Torah, and you ask me what I think of it and whether you must, according to your own expression, "abandon your own soul to occupy yourself with that of others."
I am frightened by this question. Hashem has granted you success. He has enabled you to save Jewish souls who could have abjured. You help them to remain Jews faithful to Hashem and to His Torah. You can verify all of this concretely, with your own eyes of flesh. Now, your yetzer hara* rises up and makes you say: "Who knows whether this is what should be done? Why not adopt another activity? Perhaps then I shall be able to progress in the study of Torah!"
The Gemara*, in Tractate Moed Katan 9b, says that one interrupts one's study of Torah to put a mitzvah* into practice when one cannot charge another with doing it. And, commenting on the verse "the rich and the poor meet, Hashem makes the eyes of both shine," Tractate Temurah says that when the "rich" in knowledge of Torah comes to the aid of the "poor," Hashem also makes the eyes of both shine. The "rich" is then himself rewarded, and his study is thereby strengthened.
This goes far beyond what our Sages say, in Tractate Ta'anis 7a: "I have learned much from my teachers and my friends, but from my talmidim* more than from all the others," for it concerns, in this latter case, someone who studies to the full measure of his possibilities, and it is indeed said that "I have learned much." Tractate Temurah, by contrast, says that Hashem makes the eyes of both shine. For, in order to study, one must benefit from divine assistance, and in this case, one obtains light to the measure of Hashem. This, obviously, is in no way comparable to what was previously evoked.
I mean to say that, not only by interrupting your study for some time do you put into practice a positive precept of the Torah, as Tractate Moed Katan says, but, even more, to interrupt the study is, in this case, to perpetuate it. One thereby obtains a heart and a brain a thousand times more refined, so that, in a short time, your study will know considerable success.
One can observe, in this matter, the depth of the words of our Sages who teach, in Tractate Shabbos 105b: "Such is the manner of acting of the yetzer hara, who first asks only for a slight transgression, and ends by leading one to serve avodah zarah*." My father-in-law, the Rebbe, deduces from this that the inclination toward evil is particularly cunning. He knows how to address each person in terms that will convince him. In the end, he convinces him and locks him into a situation where he can lead him to serve avodah zarah.
You will consult, in this regard, the kuntres* that has been edited for Chai Elul*[3]. It has surely already arrived in your city, and it bears upon this explanation of our Sages.
I conclude my letter by wishing you success in your sacred mission. You will also draw from it success in the study of Torah, which will be permeated with yiras Shamayim*. And, you will progress at once in its knowledge and in yiras Shamayim.
I would like to know how you studied Torah before becoming an active member of "the association of those active in the domain of Torah," and whether you now have a fixed time for the study of nigleh* of the Torah and Chassidus*.
With my brachah* that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,
You will find enclosed an excerpt[4] of the sicha* of Shabbos Mevarchim[5] Elul, which will interest you.
