To the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Shmuel Gedalyah[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I read with pleasure your letter of 5 Elul, in which you tell me of your military service[2] and of the activity that you carry out in the army to strengthen Yiddishkeit*, to instill yiras Shamayim* in your comrades and your environment.

I was very pleased to have a precise report on this, for it is impossible to express in writing how important all this is. You are taking on a particularly fundamental mission, the dimension of which no one truly knows. If one considers all that has been accomplished, one can rightly think that, even if you had reached the army only for this, you could have been satisfied with it.

When you fulfill your obligations, you will surely find a moment to study Torah, including with other persons, in the tranquility of body and mind at once.

You will find enclosed an excerpt[3] of the sicha* of the farbrengen* of Shabbos Mevarchim[4] Elul. It would be good for you to disseminate it, in the appropriate manner, among your friends, in your unit, and to those who share the same ideal and who can transmit it to other units. If a complementary explanation is necessary, I rely on your judgment to express it in the most suitable terms. I would like to know the positive actions that you have carried out in this domain.

I conclude by earnestly asking you to convey my regards to your friends, the soldiers — and not only to the "religious soldiers," according to the expression you use in your letter. You know the following expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: "A Jew does not want and cannot be separated from Hashem." All your friends are therefore indeed religious, but some do not yet know it. In the end, none of them will be repelled. They will become aware that they are faithful to Hashem and to His Torah.

Consequently, you will indeed convey my brachah* to all, that they be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, all the more so as the one which is coming will be the Shemittah*[5]. Through the effort of all those who reside there, the words of the verse shall be fulfilled: "It shall be a year of Shabbos for the land, a Shabbos for Hashem."

With my brachah for success in the influence that you exert on your comrades and that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, as well as all your environment,

בנועם קראתי מכתבו מה' אלול, בו מתאר את שירותו בצבא וגם פעולותיו שם בנוגע לחיזוק היהדות ולהשפעה ביר"ש על חבריו וסביבתו,

נהניתי במאד בקראי את הפרטים בזה, כי גודל הענין בזה אין לתאר בכתב. וממלא הוא בזה שליחות גדולה ביותר, ואין אתנו יודע עד מה, אבל בהתחשב עם גודל ערך פעולותיו בזה, הנה בצדק יש לומר שאם לא בא בצבא אלא בשביל זה, דיו, וכשימלא תפקידו בזה בטח יוכל לקבוע עתים לתורה לעצמו וגם עם זולתו מתוך מנוחת הנפש ומנוחת הגוף גם יחד.

מוסגר פה קטע משיחת התועדות שבת מברכים אלול, אשר מהראוי שיפרסמו באופן המתאים בין לחבריו והפלוגה שלו והן לחבריו בדיעה שיכול לבוא עמהם בקשר בפלוגות אחרות, ואם צריכים עוד איזה הסברה נוספת בזה, הרי על בינתו אשען למצוא אותיות המתאימות להסברה זו, ואתענין לדעת מפעולתו הטובה בזה.

אסיים בבקשה נפשית למסור ברכתי לכל חבריו אשר בחיל (לא כמו שהוא כותב במכ' רק החיל הדתי. כי ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, "אז א איד ניט ער וויל און ניט ער קען זיין אפגעריסען פון אלקות" ובמילא כל החברים שלו דתיים המה, אלא שיש מהם שחסר להם הידיעה עד"ז, אבל סוכ"ס הרי לא ידח ממנו נדח, וגם הם ידעו שנאמנים הם לה' ולתורתו, ולכן הנה ימסור) לכולם ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה, ובפרט אשר שנה הבאה היא שנת השמיטה, הרי יקויים בה, ע"י השתדלות כל יושבי', שבת שבתון יהי' לארץ שבת לד'.

בברכת הצלחה בהשפעתו על חבריו וכתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה לו ולכל סביבתו.
