To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Yosef Yehuda[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 9 Elul, in which you inform me of the organization of your day. You conclude by posing to me the following question. You have the habit of davening* very slowly, and you cannot therefore join the tzibbur*. Sometimes, it even happens that you go beyond the time of tefillah*.

Here is my answer.

The minhag* of the Chassidim, very often based on a teaching of our masters, is to join the tzibbur to answer Borchu[2], Kedushah[3], and to listen to the krias haTorah*, then to daven slowly, sometimes even at length.

In the HaTamim* anthology, one finds an explanation of the Rav of Avrutch[4], son of the Tzemach Tzedek*, who says that one must daven with the community of the ten powers of one's soul.

You will surely organize a farbrengen* on the occasion of Chai Elul*, and you will disseminate the content of the excerpt[5] of the sicha* of Shabbos Mevarchim[6] Elul, in the appropriate manner.

You are a fundraiser for the benefit of Beis Rivkah*[7], and you surely know the reflection of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding emissaries and fundraisers: "They must gather material goods and sow spirituality." May Hashem give you great success in this dual mission.

במענה על מכתבו מט' אלול, בו מבאר סדר היומי שלו, ומסיים בשאלה, כי מפני רגילותו להתפלל לאט לאט, הנה חסר אצלו ענין התפלה בצבור, ולפעמים גם זמן התפלה:

מענה : ידוע בזה הנהגת החסידים ולפעמים תכופות הי' זה עפ"י הוראת נשיאינו רבותינו הק', אשר בענין תפלה בצבור נהגו בשמיעת ברכו, קדושה (וקריאת התורה) בהמנין, ואח"כ התפללו במתינות ולפעמים גם באריכות, והרי ידוע ג"כ הפירוש המובא בקובץ התמים בשם האוורוטשער בן האדמו"ר הצ"צ שתפלה בציבור ענינה שמקבץ ומאחד את כל הכחות עשר כחות נפשו בענין התפלה...

בטח יתועדו בח"י אלול הבע"ל, וכן יפרסם את תוכן הקטע משיחת שבת מברכים אלול באופן המתאים.

ובהיותו גובה לטובת בית רבקה, הנה בודאי ידוע לו פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שאמר להמשולחים והשדרי"ם, אז מען זאל קלייבען גשמיות און זייען רוחניות, ויתן השי"ת הצלחה מרובה בעבודתו כפולה זו.
