Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1194 — Prayer

B'ezras Hashem,

15 Elul 5711,

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 21 Menachem Av and I was pleased to note that you are managing to be content with your lot, even though you specify that this is the case only "because I commanded you to be joyous."

I hope that, soon, you will be joyous because the Holy One, blessed is He, said: "Serve Hashem with simchah*," and that the avodas Hashem* is not limited to the moment of fulfillment of the mitzvah*. The verse says, indeed: "In all your ways, know Him," as the Rambam* explains in Hilchos Deos*, ch. 3, and the Tur Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim, ch. 231[1].

I hope that you will also inform me of having received an appointment as chazzan* for the Yamim Nora'im*, which approach[2]. You will surely adopt the practice that has always been that of chazzanim, and you will study the meaning of all the piyutim*, in addition to that of the words of the tefillah*. This is not a mere detail, especially as these piyutim are based on the teachings of our Sages reported by the Midrash.

You will find enclosed an excerpt[3] of the sicha* of Shabbos Mevarchim[4] Elul. I am certain that it will interest you.

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"א מנ"א ושמחתי לקרות בו אשר בכלל הנו שמח בחלקו, אף שכותב שוברו בצדו שהטעם הוא מפני שאני צויתי פריילעך זיין. ואקוה שבקר[וב] ממש יהי' שמח מפני שהקב"ה ציוה עבדו את ה' בשמחה ועבודת השם היא לא רק בשעת קיום מצוה, אלא כמא' הכתוב בכל דרכיך דעהו, וכמו שנת' ברמב"ם הל' דיעות פ"ג וטושו"ע או"ח סרל"א.

אקוה ג"כ שיבשרני שקבל משרת ש"ץ לימים נוראי[ם] הבע"ל ובטח נוהג הוא בזה כמו שנהגו מאז שהש"ץ ילמד פירוש המלות של כל הפיוטים (נוסף על פירוש המלות של התפלה), ולאו מלתא זוטרתא היא, ובפרט בפיוטים המיוסדים על מרז"ל אשר במדרשים וכו'.
