B'ezras Hashem,
13 Elul 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav I.[1],
Greetings and blessings,
You will find enclosed the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Chai Elul*. You will surely place it at the disposal of all the persons upon whom you exert your influence, thereby bringing them the light and luminary of Torah expressed therein.
My foreword[2] to this kuntres, based on an explanation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, briefly explains that Chai Elul vivifies all the forms of a man's avodas Hashem*, in particular that connected to Torah.
One can understand this in light of the affirmation of our Sages[3] that: "if one has merited it, it shall be an elixir of life; if one has not merited it, it shall be a deadly poison." Certainly, the words of Torah have been compared to fire[4] and therefore do not contract impurity. This means that Torah itself cannot be contaminated[5]. It can, however, exert a negative effect on the personality of the man who "has not merited it."
The study of one "who has not merited it"[6], devoid of yiras Shamayim*[7], abstracting from the One Who gives the Torah, may very well not be oriented toward action. Because of this, it is conceivable only if it does not bear upon love, fear, and unity of Hashem, but has a material and coarse content.
In contrast, the study of the deep teaching of Torah, called "Tree of Life," has as its objective to elevate the parcels of holiness that are in matter and to awaken love, fear, and unity of Hashem, to bring the knowledge of the seder hishtalshelus*, which is precisely what enables one to love and fear Him[8]. This approach is the means to have a whole heart, to live by the Torah that one studies.
The deep teaching of Torah, being the soul of its revealed part[9], vivifies its study. This is, in particular, the case for the heritage of the Baal Shem Tov*, which our masters bequeathed to us and which shows the greatness of Hashem, as the Alter Rebbe* writes in Iggeres HaKodesh*: "To know that the seder hishtalshelus exists enables one to have a whole heart, which is essential."
How much more so is this the case in these days, when we say[10]: "To You, my heart says: seek My innermost." One must, indeed, seek the inner aspect[11] of the heart, and for this, "I shall seek Your face, Hashem"[12].
One must therefore love Hashem and fear Him, study and meditate to attain this. One can thereby reveal that "Hashem is my Light"[13] on Rosh Hashanah[14] and "my Salvation"[13] on Yom Kippur[14], in order to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, in a visible and tangible good, materially and spiritually.
Wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
[1] This "collective-personal" letter was sent to several persons. See, regarding this, letter no. 481.
[2] This refers to the previous letter.
[3] The Rebbe notes: "Tractate Yoma 72b. See also Torah Or, p. 6c."
[4] The Rebbe notes: "Tractate Berachos 22a."
[5] The Rebbe notes: "One may question this in light of the laws of Torah study of the Alter Rebbe, ch. 4, par. 3, where it is said that: teshuvah extracts from the forces of evil the words of Torah that one has previously learned. One should also consult ch. 17 of Tanya. Perhaps one must distinguish between impurity and the grip of the forces of evil. This point will not be treated here."
[6] The Rebbe notes: "See Kuntres Etz Chaim, beginning ch. 5."
[7] The Rebbe notes: "It is the expression of the Talmud, ibid., and also that of the laws of Torah study. The Ritva says that it has the objective of self-aggrandizement and differentiation. His interpretation seems to disagree with the laws of Torah study. Nevertheless, one should consult the introduction of Rabbi Chaim Vital and Kuntres Etz Chaim, ch. 12."
[8] The Rebbe notes: "See the Rambam, Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah, ch. 2."
[9] The Rebbe notes: "See Kuntres Etz Chaim, ibid."
[10] In a Tehillim specially added to the prayer during the month of Elul and until Hoshana Rabbah.
[11] The Rebbe notes: "See Likkutei Torah, on the second discourse entitled: When you go out to war."
[12] End of the verse previously cited. "Your face" can also be translated as "Your innermost."
[13] Beginning of the Tehillim previously cited.
[14] The Rebbe notes: "Midrash Vayikra Rabbah, ch. 21."
