To the Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Nachum Dov[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to have a visit from your sons and daughters, as well as your regards, which they conveyed to me, and your request for a brachah.

I shall read this latter when I find myself by the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. I am convinced that he will invoke divine mercy so that your request be granted speedily. You will yourself be able to write to me and announce good news to me, in this matter.

You know, no doubt, that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was accustomed to present this period of Elul as the month of accounting[2], which Hashem has entrusted to each one of us, so that we may make a reckoning of all that has been accomplished during the year that has just passed and take good resolutions for the year to come, for ourselves and for all of Israel, in a positive manner.

The Midrash* relates that Hashem Himself fulfills what He asks the Jews to do. In this month of Elul, the month of mercy, He therefore makes, in Elul, the month of mercy, the accounting of all the good actions accomplished by the Jews during the months that have just passed. He does not do so, however, for the bad actions, for, undoubtedly, the Jews will regret them and they will be erased, without even leaving a trace.

The good actions are therefore eternal. Thus, from Rosh Chodesh* Elul, one makes the accounting of them, and Hashem, Who is the perfection of good, makes this reckoning with benevolence. He is disposed to satisfy all the needs of the Jews, from His full, open, holy and broad hand. How much more so is this the case for the Jews who take good resolutions concerning the year to come. The Holy One, blessed is He, takes them into account already from now, thereby broadening the merits and the reward of each person concerned.

This past year, you have, baruch Hashem*, strengthened the tzedakah* fund and introduced new Sifrei Torah*. You have financed the schools providing a religious education. This merit concerns the entire community. There is, in addition, all that you accomplish, on a personal level, regarding everything connected to Torah and mitzvos*.

I am convinced that Hashem has taken all of this into account, that He will intensify, in consequence, His goodness and His mercy, will grant you to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, which also includes good health and the possibility of elevating yourself in the study of Torah, in tzedakah, and in tefillah b'tzibbur*.

Your children will personally convey my regards to you. I would simply like to reiterate here the request that I formulated to them. Can you organize a farbrengen*, once or even several times? On the occasion of a Chassidic celebration, ahavas Yisroel*, ahavas haTorah*, and ahavas Hashem* are aroused. And, you will be wished long days and good years.

With my brachah that you be in good health, inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,

You will find enclosed a receipt for the amount that accompanied your request for a brachah.

ממנו)וגם את הפ״נ(.

כשאהי׳ על ציון חמי כ״ק אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע ,אקרא את

הפ״נ שלו ,ובטוחני שהוא יעורר רחמים רבים שתקויים בקשתו שכותב

בפ״נ ,בקרוב ,ויוכל לכתוב ולבשר בעצמו בשורות טובות בזה.

בטח יודע ,שלחודש הנוכחי אלול ,נהג חמי כ״ק אדמו״ר לכנות חודש

החשבון ,אשר השם יתברך נתנו לכולנו לעשות חשבון מהשנה שחלפה וגם

לקבל על עצמנו החלטות טובות לשנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל

לטובה ולברכה.

במדרש כתוב ,שמה שהקב״ה מצוה לישראל לעשות ,גם הוא עצמו

עושה זאת ,במילא מובן שבחודש הרחמים -אלול -גם הקב״ה עושה

חשבון מכל הדברים הטובים שבני ישראל עשו במשך חודשי השנה שעברו

)מהמעשים הלא טובים לא עושים חשבון ,כי יהודים הרי ודאי יעשו

תשובה ,במילא המעשים הלא טובים ר״ל ימחקו ולא ישאר מהם שום

רושם( אבל המעשים הטובים הנשארים לנצח ,הרי תיכף מראש חודש

אלול ,עושים מהם חשבון ,והקב״ה שהוא הרי תכלית הטוב ,עושה הוא את

החשבון בעין יפה ,והוא מוכן לתת עבור כך לכל היהודים מידו המלאה

הקדושה הפתוחה והרחבה ,הכל בהמצטרך להם ,ובודאי ליהודים

הלוקחים על עצמם החלטות טובות על השנה הבאה ,לוקח הקב״ה גם את

זה בחשבון ,וזה מגדיל את הזכות ואת השכר של הזכיות שיש ליהודי.

בשנה שעברה הגדיל בעזה״י את הקרן גמילות חסד וגם הכניס את ספרי

התורה ,וגם תמך במוסדות חינוך דתיים ,שזו הרי זכות הקשורה עם רבים,

מלבד הענינים הפרטיים שלו בתורה ומצוות שעושה בתור יחיד ,במילא הנני

בטוח שהשי״ת לקח כל זאת בחשבון ,ויוסיף לו ]לנמען[ במדת החסד והרחמים

שלו ,ויתן לו כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה ,שבזה נכללת בריאות

טובה ושיוכל לשגשג בלימוד תורה ,בצדקה ובתפלה בציבור.

פ״ש אישי ממני ימסרו לו ילדיו יחיו .רצוני להזכיר כאן ,את מה

שמסרתי בעל־פה ובקשתי שיארגן התוועדות חסידית ,פעם אחת או כמה

פעמים ,וודאי שבמסיבה חסידית יתעוררו באהבת ישראל ,אהבת התורה

ואהבת השם ,וגם יברכו אותו באריכות ימים ושנים טובות.
