Greetings and blessings,

You have surely received in due time my previous letter. For now, I would like to plead for a reconciliation. Indeed, you are doubtless preparing to return to the city these days. I do not know if you have noticed it, but I am striving to bring about a reconciliation between you and the one who wrote me, in allusive terms, concerning you. We find ourselves at the start of the school year, in days of chesed* and rachamim*[1], and the moment is therefore particularly propitious to bring about this reconciliation.

I do not know who is to take the first step in this direction — the descendant of Aharon[2], who loved even "creatures"[3] and brought them close, as the Avos d'Rabbi Nasan explains at length, or else the Yisrael, who must show respect for the Kohen and quickly bring shalom* into evidence in the world. According to the expression of Rabbi Yehudah ben Teima, one must be "light as a deer"[4]; but in any case, shalom must reign in Yisroel. I thank you in advance for giving me good news in this matter.

Enclosed is the brochure on the activity of the Chabad community, which will surely interest you. As the Shulchan Aruch* reports, Orach Chaim ch. 70[5], Chazal* describe the greatness of one who devotes himself to public needs.

In a pleasant manner, I will cite what Midrash Shemos Rabbah ch. 6 par. 2[6] says. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi had forgotten certain halachos. But Chazal also bring the following clarification: all those halachos bore upon death and burial.

This may be linked to the two opinions expressed in Kesubos 103b[7], seeking to determine which was greater — Chanina's capacity to restore, by his analysis, the knowledge of Torah, or the action of Rabbi Chiya, who intervened so that it should not be forgotten[8]. And the Gemara concludes: "How great are the deeds of Chiya!"

מכתבי הקודם בטח קבל במועדו, ועל של עתה באתי בענין של קירוב לבבות, כיון שבטח ימים אלו מתכונן כת"ר לחזור העירה... והנה אינני יודע אם הרגיש כת"ר בזה, אבל משתדל אני לקרב את הלבבות שלו ושל זה שכתב לי אדותיו ברמז, ונראה לי אשר עתה בהתחלת זמן הלימודים ובימי הרצון והרחמים שעת הכשר היא לקרב את הלבבות יותר ויותר.

אינני יודע על מי לעשות הצעד הראשון בזה, אם על זרעא דאהרן שהיתה מדתו אוהב (אפי') את הבריות ומקרבן, וכמבואר באבות דר' נתן באריכות, או על איש הישראלי שצריך לכבד את הכהן ולהמשיך שלום במהירות בעולם, וכמאמר ר' יהודא בן תימה קל כצבי. אבל יהי' איך שיהי', ובלבד שיהי' שלום על ישראל. ות"ח לכת"ר מראש אם יבשרני בשורות טובות בזה.

מוסג"פ קובץ עסקנות ציבורית חב"ד אשר בטח יענין את כת"ר. וידוע פסק רז"ל והובא ג"כ בשו"ע או"ח ס"ע מעלת העוסק בצרכי הרבים, ואמרתי ע"ד צחות ממה שראיתי במד"ר (שמ"ר פ"ו, ב) שר' יהושע בן לוי שכח כמה וכמה הלכות, אבל תיכף כתבו רז"ל שוברו בצדו שהי' זה הלכות הקשורות במיתה וקבורה. ויש לקשר זה עם השתי דעות בכתובות קג, ב, מה גדול יותר אם מעשה חנינא שהי' יכול להחזיר התורה בפלפולו ומעשה חייא שלכתחילה לא תשתכח תורה, ומסיק בגמרא כמה גדולים מעשה חייא.
