Igrot Kodesh · Letter 118 — Marriage as the Soul's Mission in the World
Volume 1 · Letter 118
By the grace of Hashem,
Friday, 20 Kislev 5704,
To the distinguished young man, Rav Meir Greenberg,
I greet you and bless you.
You invited me to your wedding, which will be celebrated in a good and fruitful moment. In response, I express to you my blessing — a blessing of Mazal Tov*, Mazal Tov. You will build a Jewish home, based on the Torah and the Mitzvot.
It is clear that the soul, when it enters the body, has no need to be transformed. It must bring elevation to this body, to the animal soul, and to the portion of the world entrusted to it, as chapter 17 of the Tanya explains. Torah is of the same etymology as Hora'ah*, teaching. Indeed, the Torah is the guide that enables one to obtain such a result, when one puts into practice the Torah and the Mitzvot, all of which have the purpose of bringing elevation to the animal soul.
Wishing to assume his role of transforming matter, man is confronted with a difficulty that our Sages express in these terms: "He brings wheat to the house. Can he consume it in that state?" He therefore needs "a help, facing him" — that is, a wife.
Each one must marry, according to the various stages stated in the Mishnah. At five years, one begins Torah study, then one accesses Mishnah and Talmud. Then one marries at eighteen, so that when one is twenty, one is of age to earn a living — that is, to impose upon oneself "an immense effort," according to the expression of the Admur HaZaken in his Shulchan Aruch, in order to be able to transform this material world.
Indeed, Chassidut explains that one who has undergone such preparation has finally reached perfection. He can therefore conduct "commercial activity." For this, he must have studied Talmud for five years [1], as the Admur HaZaken says in the third chapter of his Laws of Torah Study.
Certainly, the text speaks here of two or three years. This is because it establishes the count from the extremity of the years [2]. Indeed, there are two opinions on the age of eighteen. According to the Tosafot, it corresponds to the end of the eighteenth year, and according to the Rambam, to its beginning.
But before that, our Sages say that one accedes at thirteen to the practice of the Mitzvot, and this is then the beginning of the service of Hashem. However, this concerns then only the body and the animal soul. It does not yet allow one to transform the material world, as it is said: "I will drive him out little by little" [3].
This is, however, not the essential purpose of the Mitzvot. It is therefore not the best way to put them into practice. That is why the Shulchan Aruch says: "He who marries at the age of thirteen acts well." Moreover, according to Rashi*, he can already do so one year before [4], when the vows he pronounces are valid according to the Torah.
Marriage allows one to have children and to reveal the infinite character of Hashem in the world. The same is true in the spiritual dimension, whose purpose is also to make evident the infinite character of Hashem within creation. This is possible through the accomplishment of the Mitzvot which, from this point of view, surpass Torah study and are compared to hairs [5].
Now, the Jews, through the efforts they make, reveal all this in the Torah, which they connect to its first source. Moreover, the most elevated among them have a perception that transcends the levels of concealment imposed by creation. Thus it is said of Rabbi Meir that he had a higher vision, as the Likkutei Torah explains.
With my blessing of Mazal Tov, of immediate Teshuvah and immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee
