By the grace of Hashem,

5 Elul 5711,

To the talmidim* of the Torah institutions in general,

and of the yeshivos* in particular[1],

upon whom Hashem will bestow long life,

Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of the start of the school year, which is approaching for us and for all Yisroel for the good and for the berachah, I extend to you my cordial and warm berachah that the One who grants man discernment, intelligence, and wisdom illumine His countenance toward you. May this beginning of the school year be fruitful for you in every respect.

Every action performed by a Yid* or a Yiddishe maidel* must have a tachlis*. This is also the case with the vacation that has just passed. It allowed you to renew your strengths, to be still more determined to continue, or as the case may be to begin, with ardor and enthusiasm, the study of Torah, a good chinuch* suffused with yiras Shamayim*.

I hope and pray that you will make practical use of this ardor and of the enthusiasm necessary to acquire Torah, which is a Toras chaim*, given by the Source of life[2], being the inheritance of the Jewish people, of whom it is said[3]: "V'atem hadeveikim baHashem Elokeichem chaim kulchem hayom" — "You who are bound to Hashem your Elokim, you are all alive today."

In this month of Elul in particular, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was wont to call "the month of the cheshbon"[4] — that of the year just past, introducing the good resolutions for the year approaching — I am profoundly convinced that you will draw up a sincere accounting of all that can be improved in your conduct, so that your studies and your conduct may be, in the future, the best possible, and may bring you good materially and spiritually.

I conclude by extending to you my berachah that each one of you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, together with your parents, your mechanchim*, and the directors of your schools,

לקראת התחלת זמן הלימודים, הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, ברכתי חמה ולבבית שלוחה לכם, אשר החונן לאדם חכמה בינה ודעת יאר פניו אליכם ותהי' ההתחלה וכל שנת הלימודים בהצלחה בכל הפרטים.

כל מעשה ומעשה של בני ובנות ישראל, צריך להיות בו כונה ותכלית רצוי'. גם ימי החופש שחלפו זה עתה יש להם כונה ותכלית, והן - להחליף כח ולהוסיף אומץ בכדי שתוכלו להמשיך - והמתחילים, להתחיל - לימוד התורה וחינוך הכשר ביראת שמים ביתר התמדה ויתר חיות.

הנני מקוה, ואני תפילה, כי תוציאו מן הכח אל הפועל את השקידה, ההתמדה והחיות הדרושים לקנין התורה, שהיא תורת חיים, מפי אלקים חיים, מורשה לעם ישראל שעליהם נאמר "ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כלכם היום".

ובימי חודש אלול אלה בפרט, החודש שמרגלא בפומי' דכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לקראו בשם "חודש החשבון", חשבון השנה ההולכת וחולפת, וההחלטות טובות על להבא, הנה בטחוני חזק, כי תעשו חשבון צדק ממה שראוי לשנותו לטוב ולתקנו בעניני הנהגה וסדר בעבר, בכדי אשר מכאן ולהבא יהי' לימודכם והנהגתכם על הצד היותר טוב, לטוב לכם בגשמיות וברוחניות.
