Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1175 — Tzedakah

Volume 4 · Letter 411

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Elul 5711,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter and the request for a berachah which accompanied it. When I was at the Ohel* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I read the latter, and there is no doubt that he will invoke divine mercy so that the needs of each one of you may be satisfied.

Concerning the kesav*[1] you sent — Chazal* say that such a function is a servitude and not a mark of honor. This is true of all appointments that may be made within the Jewish people, but how much more so in this domain, which requires all the components of the Yiddishe neshamah*[2] and even the etzem* of that neshamah, transcending even its highest components. By this means one can unite the writer of this kesav and its addressee.

May we all, each in his own manner, put into practice the mission entrusted to us in this world, with tranquility of body and soul, in true expansiveness, as the maamar* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, published for Chai Elul, presently in press, explains. It shows that true expansiveness is that of taanug*, with which intellectual perception must therefore be linked.

The time has come that the presence of someone trained by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, be felt in your surroundings. The wellsprings[3] must, evidently, find their way outward. I would like to know what you are accomplishing in this domain. You know the saying of my father-in-law that "a covenant has been forged with effort, that it is never in vain."

Enclosed is an excerpt[4] from the farbrengen* of Shabbos Mevarchim*[5] Elul. You will endeavor to disseminate it in the appropriate manner.

With my berachah to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,

Notes

[1] By which this chassid undertook to bind himself to the Rebbe.

[2] The Rebbe here mentions Nefesh, source of vegetative existence; Ruach, source of the emotions; Neshamah, source of the intellect; Chayah and Yechidah, source of the supra-conscious manifestations.

[3] Of Chassidus.

[4] See letters no. 1158–1161, 1164, 1171, and 1172.

[5] The Shabbos which blesses the coming month.
