Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1172 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 408
By the grace of Hashem,
3 Elul 5711,
Brooklyn,
Blessings and greetings,
I duly received your letter of the 17th of Menachem Av, in which you tell me that you are the secretary and treasurer of an Orthodox settlement called Netivah. Nevertheless, you and your wife are not satisfied with the conditions of work and life in this place. You therefore ask me whether you should look for something else.
It seems to me that you should retain this position, which is at once a responsibility and a source of livelihood. It enables you to make use of your presence in the village and of the influence you exert there to maintain the traditional values in daily life, to strengthen Yiddishkeit*, to spread Torah and mitzvos* in the appropriate manner. It is in this way that you will receive all the berachos.
You say that your workload does not allow you to set a time for limud HaTorah*. I regret this very much, and I regret even more that you sincerely think this is so. For in this state of mind, you will not seek to set things right.
It is quite clear that you do have the possibility. Everything depends on your resolve, and nothing stands in the way of will[1] — especially when it concerns the study of nigleh* and of Chassidus*, for which the nefesh ha'Elokis* thirsts. But the chametz*[2] prevents this fulfillment. It is certain that, if you wish, you can find the means and the time to study nigleh and Chassidus.
Very soon you yourself will be astonished at not having studied until now. Chazal* indeed say that the hatzlachah* of a Yid* in general, and of a Torah scholar in particular, depends on his attachment to the Torah of Hashem.
You also inform me that your wife is expecting a child. May Hashem grant that the pregnancy proceed well, that she give birth as is fitting, in its time, and that you announce good news to me in this regard.
Enclosed is an excerpt[3] from the farbrengen* of Shabbos Mevarchim*[4] Elul. I ask you to disseminate it, in the appropriate manner and with the appropriate words, among those around you.
With my berachah that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,
Notes
