To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of the 27th of Menachem Av, to which was appended the check of the chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Chaim Yaakov Gass[2]. As you requested in your previous letter, the receipt was sent to your relative, Rav Naftali Kahana.

I continue to hold, as I indicated in my previous letter, that you should reinforce your public teaching of Chassidus*. And you know that the term "public," synonymous with the plural, applies as soon as two persons are present.

In fact, the expression "the minimum of the plural is two" is found in the responsa of Rabbi Avraham, son of the Rambam, in ch. 86 and in ch. 110, in which he cites his father. The Sdei Yehoshua on the Yerushalmi, at the end of Berachos, attributes it to Chazal*.

And, even if one speaks of a true plural, this may also be three persons, according to Gittin 46a, the Yerushalmi Gittin ch. 8 par. 6, and the beginning of the introduction of the Tikkunei Zohar*. Moreover, with the appropriate effort you will be able to assemble far more than three persons.

ואני בדעתי וכמו שכתבתי במכתבי הקודם, אשר צריך הוא להתחזק בלימוד דא"ח ברבים, וידוע אשר רבים, היינו כשנמצא בלשון רבים, הרי מספיק ג"כ שנים, וכלשון מיעוט רבים שנים (שו"ת הר"א בן הרמב"ם סי' פ"ו, סי' ק"י בשם אביו ובלשון "מחז"ל" גירסת שדה יהושע בירושלמי סוף ברכות) ואפילו כשהביטוי בפירוש רבים, הנה מספיק שלשה (גיטין מו, א, ירושלמי גיטין פרק ח' הלכה ו', הקדמת תקוני זהר בתחלתו) ובפרט שבהשתדלות הראוי' בטח יהי' הרבה יותר משלשה.
