Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1163 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 399

By the grace of Hashem,

1 Elul 5711,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to have news of you through the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef Weinberg[1]. He told me that your state of health has improved and that the journey you had planned could not take place. You know the explanation of the pasuk* "Ashrei yoshvei veisecha, od yehallelucha sela"[2] — "Happy are those who dwell in Your house, they shall yet praise You." It is precisely because they "dwell in Your house"[3] that they will come to "yet praise You."

I assume that you take part in shiurim* of Torah and contribute to the support of those who devote themselves to its study in your country. This in addition to the contributions which you send outside your country.

I would like to know whether you are in good health and how your business is faring. I would also like to know your spiritual state. You may write to me in Yiddish or in English, according to which is easier for you, to give news and to express requests.

I also wish to remind you of the importance of reading Tehillim* each day according to the daily division, but I am sure that you have already adopted this practice. In Elul and until Yom Kippur, a few additional kapitlach* of Tehillim are added, according to the minhag* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which he received from his great-grandfather, the Tzemach Tzedek*, and from the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and of Tanya*[4]. They are indicated in Hayom Yom*.

In Parshas Re'eh, which we read yesterday, the Torah says[5]: "See, I have placed before you life... and you shall choose life." My father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains that in giving Yidden* the command to choose Torah and mitzvos*, which constitute the way of life, Hashem grants each one the strength to overcome the trials one undergoes from without — the attacks of the yetzer hara* coming from within. One may thus follow the way of Torah and mitzvos, and in this way obtain a long life, a good life, a life of abundance and hatzlachah*.

We are accustomed, from the beginning of the month of Elul, to wish that one be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year. I therefore extend such wishes for you, your wife, and your children.

I duly received your contribution, which reached me through Rav Yosef Weinberg. I transmitted it to the office of discreet realizations, whose purpose is to assist persons or institutions without it being known, so as not to cause embarrassment and not to do harm. This is one of the highest forms of tzedakah*.

N. B.: I have just had news of you once again, through the Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef Weinberg. He showed me the long letter which you sent him, and I would like, in this regard, to make the following observation.

You write that you are anxious because you are not certain that you have fulfilled the wish of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and the instructions which he gave you, at the time, on how to conduct your affairs. Perhaps you did not sufficiently conform to his opinion, and you think you see in this the source of your health problems and your business difficulties.

It is doubtless unnecessary for me to specify that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, has always sought, and continues now to seek, only the good and the happiness of Yidden. To dwell on what has happened and to feel pain over it, ch"v*, even if — as you believe — you have not done all that he wrote to you, to imagine that you are being punished for all this, is exactly the opposite of the attitude which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, has always adopted and continues to adopt now. He, on the contrary, comes to the assistance of each person and makes him feel well. He in no way punishes, ch"v.

Here is my opinion. A few times a week, you should — bli neder* — study and read the zichronos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and his sichos*. You will strengthen yourself in the conviction that all the berachos he gave you will be fully fulfilled. You will want and you will be able to conduct your home on the path of Torah and mitzvos, even more clearly than before, and you will give tzedakah with an outstretched hand and a joyous heart.

With my berachah that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, together with all the members of your family,

[3] Rather than going on a journey.

[4] Three additional kapitlach of Tehillim are read during this period, and the entire five sefarim are thus completed at the conclusion of the various tefillos of Yom Kippur.

ידיעות ואיחולים(;

ועל כך הנני לעוררו;
