Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of the 22nd of Menachem Av, in which you inform me that your wife has been offered a position in London. You yourself have good hope of being able to settle there. You have, moreover, been written to from Australia, with a proposal that you go to that country. Finally, the Joint is undertaking the procedures for you to be able to immigrate to the United States.

In my opinion, as long as you have the ability to draw the hearts of B'nei Yisroel* close to their Father in Heaven in France, and especially in Paris, you must not leave that place. I mean that you must assist in the funding of the yeshivah*[1] and of the Talmud Torah[2].

You are, in effect, fulfilling a sacred mission, of which the pasuk* says[3]: "They shall carry [it] upon their shoulder." In its peshat*, this means that the vessels of the avodas Hashem* were not transported by animals or upon wagons.

In the matter at hand, the nefesh habahamis* cannot bear or comprehend what is at stake. But this is indeed a sacred mission. It was necessary to carry the Aron HaKodesh*, the Shulchan*, the Menorah* — that is, the revealed and the hidden parts of Torah, its luminary[4]. Those who are close to Hashem[5] were therefore to carry out the mission entrusted to them, in the place where divine Hashgachah* had led them.

The strength of the one who appoints them — that is, of my father-in-law, the Rebbe — accompanies them. For he is found in this world more than in his lifetime[6], and the shliach* is identified with the one who appoints him[7].

Obviously, this is not addressed to you personally, but to all those who take part in the leadership, material and spiritual, of the yeshivah. Kochos* have been granted them to illuminate the country with "the candle is a mitzvah and the Torah is light,"[8] as well as with the luminary of the Torah.

In parallel, it would be good to begin procedures for going to Australia. For you yourself write that these would be relatively long. May Hashem grant you the resolve and the desire that conform to His Will. You will reach the appropriate decision, both materially and spiritually.

Enclosed is an excerpt from the words spoken[9] at the farbrengen* of Shabbos Parshas Eikev.

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ב מנ"א, בו מודיע אשר מציעים לזוגתו תחי' משרה בלונדון, וכן גם לו יש תקוה להסתדר בשם, וכן מקבל מכתבים מאוסטרליא שמציעים לו לבוא לשם, ובהדזוינט משתדלים עבורם להעתקה לארצות הברית:

הנה לדעתי כל זמן שיש ביכולתם לקרב את לבן של ישראל בצרפת ובפרט בפאריז, לאביהם שבשמים (הכוונה בזה להחזיק שם את ישיבת תו"ת וכן הת"ת) אין עליהם לזוז ממקומם, כי עבודת הקדש עליהם בכתף ישאו וידוע פי' הפשוט בזה שלא היו נושאים הכלים על בהמות ועגלות, ובנדון דידן אף שהנה"ב אין יכולה לשאת ולהבין מה זה ועל מה זה אבל מכיון שזה עבודת הקדש, הארון שולחן ומנורה כו' היינו נגלה ונסתר דתורה, ואמור שבתורה, הרי הם הם הקרובים אל הוי' ועליהם למלאות שליחותם במקום אשר לשם הביאתם הכוונה העליונה, וכח המשלח עמהם הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר דאשתכח בהאי עלמא יתיר מבחיוהי, ושלוחו של אדם כמותו.

מובן אשר דברי אלה מכוונים לא לבד אליו, אלא לכל אלו השייכים להנהלת תומכי תמימים בגשמיות וברוחניות . וניתנו להם הכחות להאיר את כל המדינה כולה בנר מצוה ותורה אור ומאור שבתורה.

ביחד עם זה כדאי הדבר שיתחיל בהשתדלות נסיעה לאוסטרליא כיון שלפי מכתבו צריך זה להתארך זמן ארוך לפ"ע, והשי"ת יתן לו הרצון והחפץ המתאימים לרצון העליון ויחליט באופן המתאים לפניו בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
