Volume 4 · Letter 390

By the grace of Hashem,

28 Menachem Av 5711,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

You have informed me of the date of your birthday. I therefore extend to you my berachah that you be happy, that you earn your livelihood without difficulty, that you be able to provide for the needs of your wife and children, in tranquility of mind and body.

May Hashem also strengthen your nefesh ha'Elokis*, which is in captivity, so that it may reveal itself and restore the calm of your home. I am particularly surprised that you do not see what is plain to all — that there is here an intervention of the yetzer hara*, which in this domain is becoming ever stronger.

I have already told you many times, and I shall repeat it once again, that you must truly direct all your efforts upon shalom bayis*. Indeed, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, gave his consent to your union. Chazal* say that women have difficulty mastering themselves, that they cry easily[1]. You must therefore yield, especially when it concerns the affairs of this world.

Chazal have always emphasized the importance of shalom bayis, and in particular on Erev Shabbos*. Now, we — together with all of Klal Yisroel* — find ourselves in the afternoon of Erev Shabbos. The end of our galus* and the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu* are near[2].

It is clear that the veil and the darkness bear in particular upon shalom bayis. You know how important shalom* is. Of the Torah as a whole it is said that "its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are shalom."[3] How much more so in this final galus, which, as Chazal say in Yoma 9b[4], results from a lack of shalom — from sinas chinam*[5]. The closer the end of galus draws, the bitterer is the struggle of the forces opposed to kedushah*, preventing shalom from being established in the world in general, and in particular between a man and his wife — who correspond to the masculine and the feminine elements in the supernal worlds[6].

The result is in proportion to the effort[7], and it is certain that one receives the necessary kochos* to overcome the test. You will also consult Kuntres Heichaltzu*[8].

With my berachah for the attainment of yiras Shamayim* and shalom bayis,

Notes

[1] Niddah 31b — "women's tears come easily."

[2] See letter no. 1141.

[3] Mishlei 3:17.

[4] Yoma 9b — Bayis Sheini was destroyed because of sinas chinam.

[5] Sinas chinam — "causeless hatred," without logical reason.

[6] Husband and wife correspond to the supernal masculine and feminine, mashpia and mekabel.

[7] Literally, in the expression of the Gemara, "the camel's load is according to the strength of its back" — Kesubos 67a.

[8] Kuntres Heichaltzu of the Rebbe Rashab, on the imperative of combating sinas chinam.
