Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1151 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 387 · To: chapitre 3 d’Igueret Hatechouva
By the grace of Hashem,
25 Menachem Av 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I was dismayed to learn that you are multiplying fasts and mortifications, ceasing to eat several hours before tefillah*, or adopting other comparable practices.
It is self-evident to me that you are thereby weakening your health and therefore contravening the ruling of Chazal*, cited by the Rambam at the beginning of chapter 4 of Hilchos Deos[1], that having a whole and healthy body is part of the avodas Hashem*.
You also know what the Baal Shem Tov* writes to his disciple, the author of the Toldos Yaakov Yosef. You will find it in HaTamim, vol. 1, pp. 6–7[2]. The Baal Shem Tov says that he was angered upon learning that his disciple was fasting. Now, if such a thing is said concerning a luminary like the Toldos Yaakov Yosef, all the more so does it apply to people such as ourselves.
In chapter 3 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah[3], the Alter Rebbe* rules that fasting "is meant for a healthy and strong man, whom multiple fasts cannot harm bodily, as was the case in the earlier generations. By contrast, one who is disturbed by an increase of fasts and is liable to fall ill or to be weakened by them, ch"v*, as is the case in our generations, has no right whatever to multiply fasts."
If you wish to listen to me, abolish such a practice immediately. If you have adopted it three times, you will perform hataras nedarim*[4] and you will eat before davening*, including cake[5]. If your state of health requires that you eat a little more, you will do so and you will not rely on your own assessment. You will request the opinion of the director[6], the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav C. H. Kasselman[7].
You also ask me about the organization of your studies. You have thought to pursue them alone[8], for you fear that friends will exercise a negative influence upon you. Now, Chazal say in the Mishnah[9] that one acquires Torah specifically by binding oneself to friends. This does not mean that study must invariably be in a group, for it is sometimes necessary to plumb a sugya in depth oneself. Likewise, one may at times find oneself in a state of mind that requires being alone, as the question is posed concerning the deliberations of the Sanhedrin*[10] — did they take place in pairs or, for each, individually? But in any case, you must have at least one or two friends with whom you learn Torah systematically.
From time to time, you will exchange with them on nigleh* d'Torah and on Chassidus*. The hanhalah* of the yeshivah* and the rosh yeshivah* will assist you in the choice of these friends.
I hope you will set my mind at ease by return mail by informing me that you have abandoned the fasts and the mortifications, and that you are applying the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov on the verse "If you see the donkey of your enemy crouching under its burden..., you shall surely help him"[11]. It is reproduced in Hayom Yom*[12].
With my berachah for hatzlachah* in Torah and avodas Hashem suffused with yiras Shamayim*, awaiting your good news, the improvement of your physical and spiritual health,
