Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1148 — Tzedakah

By the grace of Hashem,

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of the 22nd of Tammuz, in which you inform me of your desire to come and continue your studies, for various reasons, at the Tomchei Temimim* yeshivah* of Brooklyn[1]. You tell me that this is also the opinion of the rosh yeshivah* of your yeshivah[2], the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Shlomo Chaim Kasselman[3].

You surely know that one may leave Eretz Yisroel* only to learn Torah or to marry. The learning of Torah must therefore be worthy of the name[4]. If you commit yourself to adopting such conduct, it would be good that you come to continue your studies here.

You must first reach an agreement with the hanhalah* of the yeshivah here, directly or through the hanhalah of the yeshivah in which you presently find yourself, in order to obtain the necessary official documents[5].

May Hashem grant that you find hatzlachah* in your study, suffused with yiras Shamayim*, that you be a chassid, fearing Hashem, and a lamdan* of Torah.

You surely keep the three daily portions that pertain to each individual — Chumash*, Tehillim* and Tanya* — instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and from time to time you recite Chassidus* by heart.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ב תמוז, בו כותב שמכמה טעמים רצונו לבוא ללמוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים בברוקלין, וכן הוא גם חוו"ד המנהל רוחני דישיבתם הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"מ וכו' מוה"ר שלמה חיים שי' קעסעלמאן:

בטח יודע הפסק דין אשר מארץ ישראל מותר לצאת רק בשביל תלמוד תורה (ולישא אשה) ובמילא צ"ל לימוד התורה כדבעי למהוי, ואם לוקח הוא על עצמו הנהגה כזו, אזי נכון הדבר שיבוא ללמוד לכאן, ועליו להתדבר מראש אם בעצמו או ע"י הנהלת הישיבה שלומד בה, עם הנהלת הישיבה בכאן בענין הניירות הדרושות, ויה"ר שהשי"ת יתן לו הצלחה בלימודו ביר"ש ויהי' חסיד יר"ש ולמדן,

בטח שומר השיעורים השוים לכל נפש בחומש תהלים ותניא שהם מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ומזמן לזמן חוזר דא"ח בע"פ.
