Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1145 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 381
By the grace of Hashem,
24 Menachem Av 5711,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Shlomo Chaim[1], emissary of the Sages,
Greetings and blessings,
I would like to make a general remark, which I ask you to convey to all the talmidim*[2].
It seems that some of them, for a reason I do not know, intend to depart for the United States. This does not seem judicious to me, for they can presumably continue their studies where they presently are. Perhaps there is an exception, a talmid* for whom such a journey may be useful, but in general, the act of rushing to America to continue one's studies in Brooklyn appears to me a mark of arrogance.
The mashpia*-direction of the yeshivah* must therefore set aside such a situation and explain to the talmidim the responsibility one assumes when leaving Eretz Yisroel*, may it be rebuilt and restored. It is permitted to do so only in order to learn Torah or to marry. One must therefore learn Torah in such a way that the Torah itself can attest to the authenticity of such study. And, when one is a talmid of Tomchei Temimim*[3], Chassidus* must also testify that such study is worthy of the name.
Furthermore, the present situation in Eretz Yisroel offers vast possibilities for action. Hundreds, thousands of Jews can be saved. There must therefore be on the spot an institution able to declare: "Behold the talmidim I am capable of forming" — and not: "These talmidim are now elsewhere; take my word for it when I tell you what they are."
Furthermore, with time, I have good hope that some of these talmidim will be able to become mechanchim*, teachers, at least for a few weeks or a few months, even while continuing their studies at the yeshivah. The importance of such activity is inestimable.
I have just received your letter, in which you tell me that you also wish to come here for the seventh month[4], the one which is satiated with all forces[5]. Now, every moment of it which you can use to exercise a positive influence upon the talmidim is precious. Instead of this, you wish to abandon your flock to its fate.
It is, in general, painful for me to deliver mussar*, all the more so since I do not know whether your letter formulates a question you are putting to me or sets forth information you are communicating. In the latter case, there is, of course, no place for mussar. Nevertheless, when I read your letter, I could not believe my eyes.
Obviously, my opinion does not prevent you from procuring the official documents[6]. If what you communicate to me is a decision you have already made, you may write directly to the secretariat in this matter. The steps will then be undertaken, insofar as possible.
My opinion, however, is quite clear. It is the one I expressed earlier.
With my berachah for hatzlachah*, with your talmidim and with yourself,
