By the grace of Hashem,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Zalman[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I learned with pleasure that you have had a son, in a propitious time. I extend to you my blessing that you may educate him, with your wife, to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds (maasim tovim*), as well as your other children, in tranquility of spirit and of body.

There is a saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which is based on the teaching of our Sages according to which "Hashem acts middah keneged middah*". He says that those who dispense to others[2] a good chinuch* are rewarded by Hashem and can educate their own children to "the candle which is a mitzvah, the Torah which is light, the way of life"[3]. May Hashem grant that you may often convey good news to me and the realization of these blessings.

I enclose for you the report of what I said, at a chassidic farbrengen*, regarding the month of Elul. It will surely interest you, and above all, positive actions will result from it — for, as our Sages say, "It is not the study but the deed that is essential"[4].

I conclude, as I began, in extending to you and your wife my blessing of mazal tov*.

שלום וברכה!

בנועם קבלתי את הידיעה שנולד לו בן למז"ט, והנני בזה להביע ברכתי שיגדלוהו הוא וזוגתו שתחי' לתורה חופה ומעשים טובים ביחד עם שאר ילידיהם שי' מתוך מנוחת הנפש ומנוחת הגוף.

ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע על יסוד מרז"ל שמדותיו של הקב"ה הם מדה כנגד מדה, שכל אלו המתעסקים בחנוך הכשר הרי הקב"ה משלם להם מדה כנגד מדה שיגדלו הם את ילידיהם שי' בנר מצוה ותורה אור ודרך חיים וגו' ויהי רצון שיוכל לבשרני בשו"ט ממילוי ברכות אלו לעתים תכופות.

מוסג"פ קטע ממה שאמרתי בהתועדות בנוגע לחדש אלול אשר בטח יענין אותו והעיקר שיבוא לידי פועל טוב וכמרז"ל לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה.
