By the grace of Hashem,

Eve of Wednesday of Parshas Eikev,

"And it shall be, if you hearken"[1],

In its time[3], I accepted with pleasure the proposal of the Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Menachem Zev HaLevi[4], who wished to compile a collection of laws and customs in common use[5] but sometimes neglected by certain persons who do not understand their importance, or do not even know that they exist.

I greet with great satisfaction the appearance of a first compilation. I therefore write these few lines to express my wishes and my blessing.

I thus extend my blessing that there be accomplished, in these words emanating from the heart of the chassid who carried out this compilation and gave it form, the assurance of our Sages[6] according to which: "words that emanate from the heart enter the heart" of those who become acquainted with this collection. They will accomplish its terms, each according to what he must do, observing the positive commandments and guarding against transgressing the prohibitions.

The sichos* and letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which the chassid, author of this compilation, has also edited, will undoubtedly bring an appreciable help in this matter.

Various texts underscore the value of practices that men consider to be of lesser importance. It has been emphasized to us[7] that one can in this way completely depart from the right path, chas v'shalom*: "Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of vanity: those who tread them under foot and take no account of them. Subsequently, the iniquity is amplified and becomes like a wagon-load that removes a man from this world and from the World to Come."

And we have been told[8] what the punishment will be: "Why must I be filled with fear when I experience evil? Because the iniquity is at my heels (akeivai). It is the matter of the light mitzvos* (mitzvos kalos), to which men do not pay attention, which they tread under heel, and these surround me."

But we have also been given the assurance[9] that the reward will be considerable:

"And it shall be (V'haya)[10] if you hearken, if you observe the light mitzvos that are trodden under heel, Hashem your Elokim will keep for you the covenant and the kindness which He swore to your forefathers. He will love you, bless you, and multiply you."

בעונג קבלתי ,בשעתה ,את הצעתו של הרה״ח הוו״ח אי״א נו״מ וכו׳

מו״ה מנחם זאב שי׳ הלוי ,שיחבר קובץ של דינים ומנהגים הנוגעים בחיי

היום יום ,ואשר לא נזהרים בהם מספיק ,רוב האנשים משום שאינם

יודעים את חומר הדינים ומנהגים ,ואחרים משום שאינם יודעים מהם

בכלל.

ובשמחה רבה בשל הופעת הקובץ הראשון ,הנני כותב שורות אלו

בתור איחול וברכה.

ברכה ,שתקויים בדברים היוצאים מן הלב של הרה״ח המקבץ ועורך,

ההבטחה^ שנכנסים אל הלב של אלו שהקובץ יגיע אליהם ,שהם יישמו זאת

בפועל ממש ,יקיימו את הדינים ומנהגים ,כל אחד לפי ענינו ,בקום ועשה

ושב ואל תעשה.

שודאי יסייעו בזה ,ובמדה רבה ביותר ,הקטעים המתאימים משיחות

כ״ק מו״ח אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע ,ממכתביו וכו׳ ,שהרה״ח

המקבץ צירף.

בכמה מקומות הראו לנו עד כמה חשובה הזהירות בענינים אלו,

הנחשבים אצל אנשים רבים כדברים קלים .הזהירו או תנ^ שזה יכול

להביא ,ח״ו ,לירידה מהדרך לגמרי :הוי מושכי העון בחבלי השוא ,דדש בי׳

בעקבא ולא חייש עלי׳ ,ולבתר אתתקף ואתעביד כעבות העגלה ,ואתתקף

ההוא חטאה ואסטי לי׳ בהאי עלמא ובעלמא דאתי .הזהירו או תנ^ אודות

העונש :למה אירא בימי רע)משום ש(עון עקבי ,מצוות קלות שאין בני אדם

משגיחין בהן אלא משליכין אותן תחת עקביהן ,יסובני .אבל גם הבטיחו

לנו‘‘ אודות גודל השכר:

והי׳^ עקב תשמעון ,אם המצוות קלות שאדם דש בעקביו תשמרון,

ושמר הוי׳ אלקיך לך את הברית ואת החסד אשר נשבע לאבותיך ואהבך

וברכך והרבך וגו׳.
