To the directors of the Yeshivah Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch

of Lod, may Hashem grant them long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letters of the 29th of Tammuz and the 5th of Menachem Av.

You write to me that you have had the idea of delegating a particular emissary to Belgium, Holland, and Switzerland, in order to collect funds for the yeshivah. In my opinion, this proposal is globally positive, but on two conditions:

A) You will discuss it with the other Lubavitch institutions[1], which also send delegates to various countries, so that there be no confusion and mutual rancor. It would perhaps even be good to organize, with several other institutions, a unified collection.

B) The delegate or delegates will not content themselves with collecting funds, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, requires[2]. In his expression, "they will harvest material goods and sow spirituality." Experience has shown that the success of the first part of their mission depends on that of the second.

במענה על מכתביהם מכ"ט תמוז וה' מנ"א.

מה שכותבים שעלה בדעתם לשלוח שליח מיוחד לבלגי' הולנד שווייץ וכו' בכוונה לאסוף כספים לטובת הישיבה, הנה לדעתי בכלל נכון הדבר, אבל בשני תנאים: א) שיתדברו בזה עם מוסדות ליובאוויטש האחרים שגם הם שולחים שד"רים למדינות שונות, בכדי שלא יהיו בלבולים ותרעומות מאחד על חברו. ואולי כדאי לסדר מגבית מאוחדת עם קצת מהם. ב) אשר השליח או שליחים שלהם, הנה כפי הוראת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, לא יתעסקו באסיפת כספים גרידא, אלא, כפתגמו, "נעמען גשמיות און זייען רוחניות". וראינו במוחש, אשר הצלחתו של חלק הראשון מעבודה זו תלוי' בהצלחת החלק השני...
