By the grace of Hashem,

18 Menachem Av 5711,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rabbanim, distinguished chassidim who fear

Hashem and lead the community of Dublin and its region,

the Chief Rabbi, Rav Yisrael Yakobovitch, and the

Dayan of the rabbinical court, Rav Zalman Yosef Aloni,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of Tuesday of Parshas Pinchas.

I was mentioning, following Shabbos Nachamu*[1], the double consolation that our Sages evoke[2]. It is so not only by its quantitative dimension, but also qualitatively. Such a consolation must not only suppress the pain, but also transform it into pleasure.

Thus, a man can become aware that the sufferings he has endured have a meaning. However, such a consolation is not double. For it to be so, one must, in addition, be able to verify that these pains were not pains at all, that they were, in reality, a hidden good (tov hane'elam*) which, due to its highly positive character, was able to receive such a formulation upon arriving down here.

One can understand all this from an explanation that ch. 26 of the Tanya* briefly introduces, and of which the Gemara* also speaks[3]. A first formulation says that "all that Hashem does is for the good (kol mah d'avid Rachmana l'tav avid)." A second, more elaborated, specifies that "this too is for the good (gam zu l'tovah)"[4].

It is the difference that can be made between an account concerning Rabbi Akiva and another, relating to Nachum Ish Gamzu. Rabbi Akiva's candle was extinguished, his donkey and his rooster were devoured, and he was thereby preserved from physical harm[5]. He then became aware that his pain was, in reality, a benefit. Nevertheless, the events he lived through were really trying, and there was therefore here only a simple consolation.

In the account of Nachum Ish Gamzu, on the other hand, precious stones and pearls were exchanged for earth[6]. Now, a miracle occurred to this earth[7] — and not only did the trial save him from misfortunes, but, more than that, it demonstrated that it was not a misfortune, but, on the contrary, an inestimable good[8].

May Hashem therefore grant, as far as you are concerned, that you may verify, not only that "all that Hashem does is for the good," but also that "this too is for the good." Hashem, who is All-Powerful, will reveal the ultimate purpose, and one will become aware that "this too is for the good," even if it does not appear to our eyes of flesh — for this good belongs to the "hidden world (alma d'iskasya*)," which transcends the "revealed world (alma d'isgalya*)."

With my blessing for success in your sacred mission, in invoking heavenly mercy, and in hoping to receive good news, in general and also in particular,
