To the distinguished chassid, who faithfully discharges

his task, Rav Y. HaCohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter of yesterday, and I hasten to reply to you to recount a new miracle of my father-in-law, the Rebbe:

I was vexed because I was unable to inform my father-in-law, the Rebbe, at his tziyun* on the eve of Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av, that you had transmitted to me your customary check for the funding of his works[2]. Nevertheless, as I have already told you, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told me once that I should exercise no pressure on you in the financial domain. I therefore did not intervene.

I now realize that the Rebbe himself led you to this realization[3]. Indeed, you yourself write to me that you had remorse. This recalls the proclamations made in the celestial spheres which suggest to men thoughts and good decisions for which they were not, by themselves, prepared, as Likkutei Torah, Parshas Tetze, p. 36d, and, more precisely, the maamar* entitled "Az Yashir Moshe" of 5700[4], which you surely possess, explain.

Hashem will help you, and not only will you not diminish your positive accomplishments, chas v'shalom*, but rather, you will increase them — for, in accordance with the opinion of our Sages, "maalin bakodesh*, one ascends in matters of holiness."

An evident intervention of divine Providence brought it about that all this took place on the 15th of Av — a date which our Sages mention at the end of tractate Taanis, noting that "thereafter, the addition becomes possible," with regard to Torah[5], and Torah brings it about that the same be true for mitzvos*, in particular for tzedakah*, which is qualified as a generic mitzvah and considered, by itself, as the totality of the mitzvos.

You will consult, on this subject, ch. 37 of the Tanya*, the end of ch. 3 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, ch. 3 and 4 of Iggeres HaKodesh*, as well as the end of ch. 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12.

כל הזמן הצטערתי מזה שבערב ראש חודש מנחם אב לא יכולתי

למסור באהל ששלח את ההמחאה הרגילה שלו לענינים של הרבי ,אבל כיון

שהרבי אמר לי לא ללחוץ אותו ]את הנמען[ בכסף -כפי שכבר מסרתי לו

פעם -לא יכולתי לעשות בזה מאומה ,עכשיו אני רואה שהרבי הכניס בו

את הרעיון ישירות ,או בלשון שכותב ״לבי נוקפי״ שזה דומה לכרוזים

מלמעלה שמכניסים באדם מחשבות והחלטות טובות ללא הכנה מצידו,

וכמו שנתבאר בלקוטי תורה פ׳ תצא)לו ,ד( ובארוכה יותר במאמר אז ישיר

דשנת ת״ש .מסתמא יש לו את המאמר. . .

והשי״ת יעזור לו לא רק לא למעט ח״ו ממנהגיו הטובים ,אלא להוסיף

עליהם וכמרז״ל מעלין בקודש.

ובפרט נראית ההשגחה פרטית שכל הנ״ל הי׳ בחמשה עשר באב ,שעל

יום זה אומרים חז״ל )סוף תענית( מכאן ואילך דמוסיף יוסיף -בנוגע

לתורה ,ובמילא מובן שהתורה פועלת אותו סדר והנהגה גם במצוות ובפרט

במצות הצדקה הנקראת בשם מצוה סתם ושקולה כנגד כל המצוות )ראה

תניא פרק ל״ז ,אגרת התשובה סוף פרק ג׳ אגרת הקדש סימן ג׳ ד׳ סוף סימן

ה׳ ו׳ ח׳ ט׳ י׳ י״ב(.
