Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1123 — Health
Volume 4 · Letter 359
By the grace of Hashem,
4 Menachem Av 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter, which was undated, with the request for blessing that was attached to it. When I am at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will read it. Undoubtedly, he will invoke divine mercy that you may have good health and that your wife be answered in all that she desires, materially and spiritually.
I have already told you that, in my opinion, your analysis is not good and your fears are without foundation[1]. There is surely nothing here but an intervention of the yetzer hara*. It is therefore preferable that you cease to think about all this, including about what still seems to you possible to repair.
Suppress, then, all these thoughts, and devote yourself rather to the needs of others — better still, think of Hashem, as very many texts of chassidus* explain. And the Rambam*, Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah, beginning of the second chapter, explains "in what manner one can love and fear Hashem"[2].
More than that, chassidus defines, in particular, what distinguishes its approach from that of mussar*. The latter advocates contemplation, meditation on the insignificance of man, on the corruption of his ways, on the evil he carries within him, on the manner of redeeming himself.
In such a case, if one effectively manages to atone for his sin, one arrives at a positive outcome — but to attain this, one must, beforehand, concentrate one's thought on all that is bad or, at the very least, on what is not good.
Chassidus, on the other hand, asks one to contemplate, to meditate on the splendor of Hashem, or, at the very least, on the aspect of the human personality which is in the image of the Most High, on ahavas Yisrael*. In such a case, even if one does not arrive at the conclusion that should follow, one has nonetheless put into practice the mitzvah* of "Know the Hashem of your father"[3], in observing the good and the value of holiness.
All that has just been said applies in the same manner to your situation. All your concentration bears on subjects which are not positive[4]. Now, perhaps there is here only an illusion[5]. And even if you experience fears, even if these are founded and a repair is necessary, the Tanya* explains that there are specific times for doing so[6].
Moreover, who says that after this meditation and this bitterness — for it is clear that sadness is totally excluded — you will fully draw the conclusion that should follow?
Meditate, therefore, on the greatness of the Creator, who calls forth, brings into being, and perpetuates His creatures at every instant. One must therefore feel, permanently, the presence of the creative Force within created matter. Thus, you devote your time to putting into practice the mitzvah of meditating on the greatness of Hashem, on the fact that "Hashem hu haElokim"[7], that "V'ahavta es Hashem Elokecha"[8].
How much more so is such an approach positive if it enables you to improve your situation. You thus gain on every level, and, in a few words: why devote yourself to "depart from evil," when you can adopt the precept "do good"[9]? If that is indeed the case, "depart from evil" will accomplish itself.
May Hashem grant that these days be transformed, for us and for all of Yisrael, into gladness and joy, very soon and in our days. Each one of us will receive joy and gladness, will put into practice the injunction, of general scope: "You shall love Hashem your Elokim, with joy and enthusiasm, in abundance." You will see in this regard the end of the laws of Lulav of the Rambam[10].
With my blessing that you may have good health and be conscious of it,
