You ask me about a woman who, according to the doctors, would run a significant risk if she were to expect a child. You wish to know whether she may have recourse to the means[1] used in such a case.

In fact, our Rebbeim adopt a lenient position[2] in this domain, and they permit various means, before marital relations or after them. You will consult the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Even HaEzer, ch. 89, which permit having recourse to them[3]. There is also a manuscript text by his son, Rabbi Yisrael Noach, which likewise grants this permission[4].

I have found this permission also in the responsa of the Racham, vol. 1, ch. 58[5]. Other opinions, on the other hand, adopt a more stringent position in this matter. They are cited by the Sdei Chemed, asefas dinim, under the entry "Ishus," par. 1, and in the Pekudas Sadeh at the same reference[6].

As for us, we must hold to the teaching of our Rebbeim. I have heard that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, also gave such a permission, in a certain manner. You will address yourself to a Rav who decides in halachah*, among the elder chassidim, and he will tell you what practice to adopt in this matter.

Obviously, all the means here in question are applied by the woman and not by the husband.

...ומה ששואל באשה שלפ"ד הרופאים סכנה לה שתתעבר, אם מותרת האשה לעשות תחבולות בזה:

הנה רבותינו נשיאינו ז"ל המה המקילים, והתירו באופנים ידועים בשעת תשמיש או לאח"ז. ראה שו"ת צ"צ אהע"ז סי' פ"ט שמתיר, ויש ג"כ גוף כי"ק מבנו מהרי"נ להתיר.

(שוב מצאתי גם כן שאלות ותשובות הרש"ם ח"א סי' נח שדעתו ג"כ להתיר) ודלא כרבני וכו' המחמירים בזה (הובא בשדי חמד אסיפת דינים מערכת אישות ס"ק א' ובפאת השדה שם). ואנו אין לנו אלא הוראת רבותינו נשיאינו, ושמעתי ג"כ בשם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שבאיזה אופנים התיר. ויפנה אל רב מזקני אנ"ש בעל הוראה היודע איך נוהגים בזה. וכמובן כל תחבולות הנ"ל המה במה שהאשה עושה ולא בהבעל.
