Volume 4 · Letter 354

By the grace of Hashem,

1 Menachem Av 5711,

Brooklyn,

Yalles, Philadelphia[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of the 28th of Tammuz, a few moments before going to the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. There I mentioned your name and that of the members of your family, so that all your needs be satisfied, as you ask in your letter. It is clear that the tzaddik who has departed this world is found there more than during his lifetime. He will invoke divine mercy that you may know success, materially and spiritually.

In accordance with your request, the amount that you sent me on the occasion of the yahrtzeit* of your father, the Rav and tzaddik, has been duly transmitted, and you will find enclosed the receipt.

The Kuntres Eichah*[3], which has just been printed, practically for the first time, from the manuscript, establishes on p. 44 a comparison between Yom Kippur and the 9th of Av — the two days of the year on which it is forbidden to wear shoes. This text underscores that the prohibition derives, in one case and in the other, from an opposite reason[2], but it is known that the highest point is directly connected to the lowest. One can conclude from this that, on the 9th of Av — which will very soon become joy and gladness — the act of refraining from wearing shoes enables one to obtain an elevation that one would not have by wearing them.

I note that this year, the yahrtzeit and the elevation of soul (aliyas haneshamah*) of your father, a Rav and a tzaddik, falls again on a day on which it is forbidden to wear shoes[4]. Obviously, all is the effect of divine Providence, in particular for those who are bound to the Torah and to the mitzvos*. The yahrtzeit thus indeed brings an ascent to his soul.

The prohibition against wearing shoes on the 9th of Av is in fact comparable to that of Yom Kippur. It falls, this year, on the 10th of Av, and may Hashem grant that we soon witness, with our eyes of flesh, the accomplishment of the promise according to which "I will turn their mourning into gladness"[5]. The content of Eichah will then be able to be interpreted in the sense of elevation, as the Kuntres Eichah shows.

With my blessing,

א'קיח
