To the distinguished chassid, who fears Hashem,

Rav Yosef[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of Thursday of Parshas Balak. I am very pleased that you have accepted my proposal, which I mentioned while I was at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe — that of bringing a contribution of one thousand dollars for the work of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, accomplished in Africa[2]. Obviously, this amount will be an integral part of the commitment you have taken on of a participation in the amount of fifty thousand dollars.

You strove to send these one thousand dollars on time, despite your cash-flow difficulties. Your merit is all the greater for it, and one can see in this the realization of the verse: "Praiseworthy is he who considers the poor; on the day of evil, Hashem will save him"[3]. This means that one who has financial difficulties and, from this perspective, can be considered as "poor," but nevertheless takes no account of it and gives tzedakah* beyond his means of the moment, will obtain, through his emunah*, the realization of the continuation of this same verse from Tehillim 41: "You have supported me in my integrity, and You enable me to stand upright before You for eternity".

I also wish that the words which the prophet Malachi attributes to Hashem be accomplished: "Test Me, please, in this matter" — that of tzedakah[4]. You will then observe that "I will open for you the floodgates of the heavens and pour out for you a blessing without end."

May Hashem grant that you witness the realization of all this, that you know considerable success, that you have the means fully to honor your commitments and even to multiply them.

קבלתי מכתבו מה׳ בלק .הנני מאוד שמח ,שקבל ]על עצמו[ את

ההצעה שהצעתי בהיותי על הציון של כ״ק מו״ח אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה

נבג״מ זי״ע ,שיעמיד אלף דולר עבור עבודת הרבי חמי באפריקה .כמובן

יחשב על חשבון תוכנית השתתפותו בסך חמשים אלף דולר.

זה שהתאמץ לשלוח את הכסף בזמן ,למרות שהי׳ בחוסר במזומנים,

עוד מגדיל את זכותו ,זה גם מתאים לפסוק ״אשרי משכיל אל דל ביום רעה

ימלטהו ה״׳ ,שהפירוש בזה הוא גם ,שבזמן שמישהו מצומצם בכסף והוא

במובן זה ״דל״ בעצמו ,ולמרות זאת אינו מתחשב בזה ונותן צדקה יותר

מכפי היכולת שלו באותו זמן ,ואז ודאי יקויים גם מה שנכתב בהמשך

יתן ,שיראה זאת בפועל ממש בהצלחה מופלגה ויוכל לעמוד בכל

התחייבויותיו ועוד להגדילן.
