To the great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and

devotes himself faithfully to communal needs,

Rav Shlomo Zalman[1],

Greetings and blessings,

In your letter dated from the days of the liberation[2], you tell me that you wish to participate in the Maamad*[3] which is personally destined to me. You also express the wish to leave the constraint and to know expansiveness.

You should know that, for various reasons, I refuse to receive the Maamad money myself. Your checks will therefore remain on deposit until you give instructions as to what should be done with them. As for your wish to leave the present constraint and to attain expansiveness — I understand that you have a good intention, and Hashem will very soon grant that it be so, in the most material and most literal sense.

But you yourself must, to the full measure of your means, direct yourself toward this expansiveness, including in the spiritual dimension. You doubtless know the saying[4] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which he cited in the name of his grandfather, the Rebbe Maharash*: "It is generally held that when one is confronted with an obstacle, one must pass under it, and if that is not possible, over it. For my part, I think that one must from the outset go over it (lechatchilah aribber*)"[5]. Everything therefore depends only on your determination.

At the chassidic farbrengen* during the festival of the liberation of the 12th of Tammuz, it was said[6] precisely that determination and submission to Hashem (kabbalas ol*) are the receptacles which enable one to overcome all the veils and the obstacles. In this way, one becomes aware that one was confronted with a test (nisayon*). Obviously, in such a case, one derives pleasure from what was accomplished.

I extend to you my blessing that you spend a healthy summer and that it enable you to prepare properly for the new year.

You will find enclosed a receipt from the fund for discreet acts (matan baseser*), for the amount of your contribution.

...ד) במה שכותב במכתבו בימי חג הגאולה, שרוצה הוא להשתתף במעמד פרטי שלי ומקוה שיצא מן המיצר אל המרחב כו', הנה בטח ידוע לו שאינני לוקח כסף מעמד מפני כמה וכמה טעמים ובמילא גם ההמחאות ששלח מונחים עד שיודיע מה לעשות בהם, מובן הדבר מעצמו שבענין היציאה מן המיצר דעתה אל המרחב כוונתי רצוי' ויה"ר שבמהרה ובעגלא דידן יוציאהו השי"ת מן המיצר אל המרחב מן המצרים וגבולים גשמיים אל המרחב בגשמיות כפשוטו, וגם מצדו יוציא את עצמו במה שתלוי בו מן המיצר אל המרחב גם ברוחניות, ובטח שמע מפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם זקנו כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהר"ש) נ"ע, די וועלט זאגט אז מען קען ניט ארונטער דארף מען אריבער און איך זאג אז מען דארף לכתחילה אריבער, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בתוקף עצמו וכמה שנדבר בהתועדות דחג הגאולה י"ב תמוז, אשר תוקף וביטול עצמי הן הן הכלים להתגבר על כל ההעלמות העכובים והסתרים, ואז רואין שאין זה אלא נסיון , ומובן מעצמו אז דאס מאכט א געשמאק אין עבודה...
