To the distinguished chassid, who fears Hashem,

Rav Menachem Nachum[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received, through the great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself faithfully to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Zalman Hecht[2], the request for blessing that you addressed to me for your son Meir Zev, son of Esther, who is currently in Korea[3].

When I am at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will read this request for blessing, and may Hashem grant that you will be able, very soon, to convey good news to me on this matter.

I saw, on the letterhead of the Bnei Yisrael shul*, that you are its secretary. The custom in the United States is that the secretary is, properly speaking, the animator of the shul, and I assume that this is also the case as far as you are concerned. You bring it to life, and what is even more important, you arrange what concerns it in the spiritual realm — the public shiurim* given there, the organization of the prayer at the conclusion of Shabbos and of the festivals. It is doubtless unnecessary to specify to you how important all this is, but I take to heart the saying of our Sages according to which one urges alacrity (zerizus*) on him who already possesses this quality[4].

I would like to underscore for you the importance of the daily reading of Tehillim*, after the morning prayer, according to its monthly division; the necessity of fixing the Saturday evening prayer in such a way that no one transgresses Shabbos[5]; the value of striving that mourners coming to recite Kaddish* also put on tefillin*. It is, very often, in this way that one can lead them to acquire this mitzvah for the rest of their lives.

It is the same for other practices, which you will know how to determine locally by your own means, knowing the conditions of the place and the personality of those who make up the community. It is in all these ways that you will infuse vitality into the shul and into those who pray there. You will make of them enthusiastic Jews. And my father-in-law, the Rebbe, gives the assurance that in such a case, Hashem does not remain in debt. He rewards "middah keneged middah*"[6] — He grants long life, increased vitality to those who are active in all these areas, as well as to the members of their family. All will be blessed by "the candle is a mitzvah, the Torah is light, and the way of life"[7], with the satisfaction of all their needs.

You will surely give me good news of your son, and I conclude in transmitting my greetings to all the members of the community. You will tell them that our Sages designate the shul as a "Mikdash Me'at*"[8]. By adopting the proper conduct in this Mikdash Me'at, one will prepare for the building of the Third Beis HaMikdash* by our righteous Mashiach* and will hasten it, very soon and in our days, amen.

I extend to you my blessing.

You will find enclosed the receipt corresponding to your donation. It has been transmitted to the fund for discreet acts (matan baseser*), which is one of the highest ways of putting into practice the mitzvah of tzedakah*.

רואה הנני על הגליון של ביהכ"נ בני ישראל, שהוא המזכיר שלהם, ובטח כמנהג אה"ב, הרי המזכיר הוא רוח החי' של ביהכ"נ, ובו תלוי אופן החיות של ביהכ"נ, ומה שנוגע ביותר הוא בעניני החיים הרוחניים של ביהכ"נ, אם יש שם שיעורים ברבים ואופן ההנהגה בעניני התפלה במוצש"ק ויו"ט וכו'. ואף שבטח למותר להעירו על חש[יב]ות ענין זה, אבל נשען הנני על מרז"ל אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין כו'.

והנני בזה להעירו על גודל הענין של אמירת היום תהלים (כפי שנחלק לימי החדש) בכל יום אחר תפלת שחרית, ולהשתדל אשר תפלת ערבית במוצש"ק תהי' באופן כזה שלא יבואו ח"ו לגרם חלול ש"ק, ועל גודל החשיבות שהאבלים ר"ל הבאים לומר קדיש יניחו ג"כ תפילין, אשר פעמים רבות זוהי הדרך להרגילם בהנחת תפילין למשך ימי חייהם, וכו' וכו' ועוד פרטים כאלו שיוכל כבודו למצוא על אתר בידעו תנאי המקום ואופני המתפללים בביהכ"נ, אשר על ידי כל פרטים אלו יוכל להוסיף חיות להביהכ"נ ומתפללי', מאכן זיי פאר לעבעדיקע אידן, ועפ"י הפתגם מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אז דער אויבערשטער בלייבט ניט קיין בעל חוב, ומשלם מדה כנגד מדה, מה שנותן חיים ארוכים ותוספת חיים לכל העובדים בענינים הנ"ל אשר הם וב"ב יחיו יתברכו ע"י נר מצוה ותורה אור ודרך חיים לכל המצטרך להם.

בטח יודיעני טובות ע"ד בנו שי' ואסיים בפ"ש לכל המתפללים שי' ולומר להם אשר ביהכ"נ נקרא בפי רז"ל מקדש מעט, וע"י ההנהגה המתאמת במקדש מעט ה"ז הכנה והקדמה להחיש בנין בית המקדש השלישי ע"י משיח צדקנו בב"א.
