Volume 4 · Letter 337
By the grace of Hashem,
14 Tammuz 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
Mr. ... spoke to me about you and about your positive activity in the areas of Yiddishkeit*. I was gratified by this. Mr. ... now writes to me that you are in need of a blessing for a speedy recovery (refuah sheleimah*).
This past Monday, the 12th of Tammuz, I was at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and I mentioned your name there, that you should have a complete healing. I hope that you will be able to convey good news to me, to tell me that you are feeling better. I will be grateful to you for transmitting this good news to me.
I would like to remind you of the practice instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which consists of reciting Tehillim* every morning after the prayer, according to its monthly division, in order to recite the entire book of Tehillim at least once a month, and to study every day a passage of the Chumash* with Rashi's* commentary. I hope that — without making it a binding vow (bli neder*) — you will keep these two studies going forward, for they bring blessing and success into the existence of every Jew.
The first verse of last week's sidra*, which we read this past Shabbos, is: "This is the chukas* of the Torah"[1]. Chassidus* explains that the word chukas, decree, also introduces another idea, for it is of the same etymology as chakikah*, engraving. It thereby alludes that a Jew must study the Torah and perform the mitzvos* in the manner of engraving and not of writing, in which the ink and the parchment are different one from the other and only joined afterwards.
One must study the Torah and perform the mitzvos as one would engrave letters in stone, so that they are an integral part of him and not a foreign body added to him. Similarly, a Jew must form one and the same entity with the Torah and the mitzvos. And so the Torah says: "If you walk in My chukos* (Bechukosai*, which is also of the same root as chakikah, engraving), I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall give its produce"[2].
With my blessing for a speedy recovery,

יהדות ,ומר . . .כותב לי גם שכעת הוא ]הנמען[ זקוק כעת לרפואה;
