B'ezras Hashem,
[11 Tammuz 5711]
I took knowledge with pleasure of the letter of your father, the Rav and chassid, in which he tells me that he studies Torah, that he has the desire to pursue his studies, to accumulate knowledge. He will surely keep this attitude, which is also that of the Holy One, blessed be He, as our Sages say in tractate Sanhedrin 99b, commenting on the verse: "He shall hold fast to that which is My strength and shall make peace with Me," which refers to the one who studies Torah lishmah*.
The Tanya* and chassidus* in general explain that Torah is the wisdom and the will of Hashem. Now, He Himself and His wisdom are one. It is therefore by studying Torah that one can fulfill the terms of the promise according to which "Israel, the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one."
Unfortunately, the sin of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil introduced death into the world, and the Bachya* underscores that the body of the child begins to wither from the very moment of his birth. In other words, his death appears from the very beginning of his life. Such is also the meaning of the verse: "On the day you eat of it, you shall die."
This is for what concerns the material dimension.
Hashem consulted the Torah in order to create the world, and everything that is found there must therefore find its source in it. And one can thus understand the question that our Sages pose, in tractate Chullin 139b: "Where does one find, in the Torah, an allusion to Haman?" Indeed, nothing can exist in the world that does not have its source in the Torah.
The sin of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil had a similar effect, just as, subsequently, that of the Golden Calf. It is known, indeed, that the children of Israel, near Mount Sinai, were cleansed and delivered from their impurity, which they then found again after the sin of the Golden Calf. There resulted from it the forgetting of Torah, as tractate Eruvin 54a says: "Were it not for the sin of the Golden Calf, the Jews would not have forgotten the Torah."
Spiritually, forgetting corresponds to death.
Materially, death intervenes after seventy years and even, if the attribute of severity is brought into play, after eighty years. Moreover, it is said that "his lifetime shall be one hundred and twenty years." Nevertheless, why is death conceivable? Because the body of the child begins to wither from his birth, as the Bachya said.
It is the same for the study of Torah. How is forgetting possible afterwards? Because from the outset, the study has not been what it should have been. Thus, our Sages say, in tractate Eruvin 54a: "if it penetrates the 248 limbs of your body, it will maintain itself." You will consult, in this regard, the Tanya, at the beginning of chapter 37, which underscores that one must study Torah in this manner.
Within the Torah, one distinguishes two parts, which the Zohar* calls "the body of Torah" — a term which one finds also in the Mishnah — and "the soul of Torah," which is its profound dimension.
The one who enters into relationship with the body of a man finds himself indeed in connection with him. Nevertheless, in order to vivify this relationship, in order that it be positive and fruitful, one must know the structure of this body, the details that constitute it, and meditate upon the existence of the soul, upon what composes it. It is solely in this manner that one can have a good knowledge of the body.
What has just been said applies, in the same manner, to what is the subject of our discussion.
There was a time when all the Jews were in good health for everything that concerns Torah and mitzvos*. Now, the Torah envisages the majority situation. According to the principle that the Rambam* enunciates, the children of Israel must eat and drink as a body in good health. In other words, they must study the revealed part of Torah and its simple meaning. And only those who devoted themselves to the inner limbs of the great body that the Jewish people constitutes — in particular the brain and the heart — had access to the profound teaching of Torah.
Then the time passed and "because of our sins we were exiled from our land." The darkness of the world became stronger and stronger. The hearts and the brains weakened, so that, in the expression of the prophet, "from the sole of the foot to the head, there is nothing intact." Henceforth, it no longer suffices to drink and to eat. One must, in addition, take medicines.
The more intense the darkness, the greater the danger for the patient, and the more it is necessary to follow a treatment. It is fitting above all to awaken the vitality which is found in the depths of the Jewish soul. Thus, one can maintain oneself, surmount the trials, the veils and the difficulties. As has been said, the Torah takes into account the majority situation. Each one of us must therefore study the profound teaching of Torah, chassidus, which brings healing to the world. Such is what the Rebbe Rashab* explains in his Kuntres Eitz HaChayim.
What results from this development is enunciated by our Sages in tractate Shabbos 31a: "one places faith in the time, the fear of Hashem is a treasure." The one who has studied the six orders of the Oral Law cannot, for all that, dispense with fearing Hashem. And our Sages further say that, if such is not the case, it is preferable not to learn Torah.
All of this concerns the time and the place where it was possible to access Torah without particular effort, in a natural manner. And how much more is it the case in the present era. One can, indeed, observe that, when one studies chassidus, the profound part of Torah, one maintains, in general, one's fear of Hashem. By contrast, the young people who say they possess only Torah are, very often, unfortunately, the illustration of the words of our Sages, in tractate Yevamos 109b: "The one who claims to possess only Torah does not even possess Torah."
What has just been said concerns all the Jews.
A fortiori, those whose parents are chassidim, who evolve in an environment where chassidus is present, where chassidic practices are observed, thus receive clearly a Divine message, underscoring to them the good portion that has been entrusted to them, without effort on their part, by their birth — knowing that this belongs to them, that it falls to them to study chassidus.
In such a case, one will study chassidus in a totally different manner. Moreover, one will vivify the study of the revealed part of Torah, of which one will eliminate the difficulties and the veils, the questions and the troubles. It is essential, indeed, that the study be enthusiastic, that one put into practice the affirmation according to which "Israel, the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one."
I would like to know what is the text of chassidus that you study. Without doubt, you will intensify this study. Our Sages say, indeed, that "one ascends in holiness and one does not descend," a principle which, according to many opinions, is instituted by the Torah itself.
I await your good news. Now, there is no good but Torah and its luminary. I conclude by extending to you my brochah for success in studying Torah with yiras Shamayim*,
