To the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav A.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letters of Tuesday of Parshas Beha'aloscha and of Monday of Parshas Chukas, with the request for a brochah* for the child and for the woman. When I find myself at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will mention their names so that they have a speedy recovery. I hope that you will give me good news in this matter.

The child surely wears a tallis katan*. If this is not the case, I propose that he do so beginning today. And the woman will take on the practice of giving tzedakah* twice a week. The amount matters little. It suffices that the gift be regular, without making a vow of it. It would be good that one of the two times be the eve of Shabbos* or of a festival, before lighting the candles.

In your letter, you tell me that you have seen the Sefer Torah of Rav Nissim Gaon, and that you must travel to see another ancient Sefer Torah, that of Rav Yitzchak Abuhav.

I would be grateful to you, if it is possible, to make a photocopy of the column on which appears the expression "petzua daka"[2]. You know what the Alter Rebbe* says in this regard[3]. A Sefer Torah was seen, of which tradition reports that it belonged to Ezra the Scribe. This word is written there as the Alter Rebbe says. I therefore thank you for kindly sending me a photocopy of this passage in these two Sifrei Torah*.

You will also consult the notes on the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the end of the chapter of addenda, p. 50b.

[2] Devarim 23:2: "He whose genitals are crushed (petzua daka) shall not be admitted into the assembly of Hashem." The word "daka" is spelled with an Alef in the Sifrei Torah of the Ashkenazim, and with a Hei in those of the Sefardim, without the meaning being modified.
[3] He requires that one write "daka" with an Alef.

בודאי הילד שי' לבוש ט"ק, ובא"ל הרי אציע שמהיום והלאה ילבוש הילד ט"ק.

והאשה תחי' תתרגל ליתן צדקה פעמיים בשבוע, ואין נוגע הכמות כ"א שיהי' בל"נ בקביעות וטוב לבחור שפעם אחד מהשנים יהי' בעש"ק ובעיו"ט לפני הדלקת נרות.

במכתבו כותב שראה ס"ת מהר"נ גאון, ושנוסע עוד לראות ס"ת עתיקה של מהר"י אבוהב ז"ל,

חפצי ובקשתי באם אפשר לעשות צילום (פוטו) מהעמוד שבו הפסוק לא יבוא פצוע דכא וכו' וכידוע שהוראה בזה ישנה מכ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן ושראו כזה בס"ת שמקובל שהיא של עזרא הסופר ושם כתוב כהפסק של אדמוה"ז. ות"ח ת"ח מראש באם ישלח לי הפוטו מהעמוד הנ"ל בשני הס"ת. ועיין מ"ש בהערות שו"ת צמח צדק סוף שער המילואים דף נו"ן ע"ב.
