B'ezras Hashem,

8 Tammuz 5711,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the directors, deans and teachers of

the Lubavitch yeshivah* of ...[1],

whom Hashem will grant long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter, your request and your question[2].

The organization of studies is modified, during the summer months, in several yeshivos*. I would therefore like to draw your attention to the following points:

A) When the students are in the yeshivah and conduct their studies there with ardor, the teachers must accord them their full attention, including outside the hours of study, striving to have them adopt, at every moment, fitting conduct and a fitting way of life.

But how much more so must this be the case during summer vacation. One must then take an even clearer interest in the students, know where each one of them is, what their occupations are, give them all the necessary help so that they remain on the proper path. Our Sages say, indeed, in tractate Bava Basra 8b, that "even when the students do not see them, they watch over them and think of them."[3] You will see what the Maharsha* says in this regard.

B) Elevation has no limit. It would therefore be good that the teachers, even the most competent, use their vacations to increase their knowledge in all the areas concerning their function, since it is a sacred mission, as tractate Bava Basra 21b underscores.[4]

C) The donors and the responsible officers of the yeshivah, when they will be on vacation, could, each time they make an acquaintance, explain to him the importance of coming to the aid of the yeshivos, tell him that "it is a tree of life for those who find their strength in it. Those who support it are happy." Our Sages say, in the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 53b: "Do not read 'me'ushar' (happy), but rather 'merosho' (from his head, from the outset)."[5] They receive, indeed, from the outset all the brochos*. You will also consult the chassidic discourse introduced by this same verse, which was delivered in 5699[6].

D) One must not be satisfied with the number of students who currently attend the yeshivah, as long as there are children who could attend it and do not, because their parents imperfectly measure the importance of sending them there.

It is therefore necessary to conduct, in every place, an organized campaign, with enthusiasm and zeal, in order to multiply the number of students attending the yeshivos. Words do not suffice to describe the immense merit represented by saving a single Jewish soul, physically, and how much more so morally, as tractate Bava Metzia 30a underscores.[7]

I would like to be informed of all the positive activities that will be carried out in this domain. I would also like to know whether you have organized a day camp. I hope to receive good news in this domain as well.

On the occasion of the festival of liberation of 12-13 Tammuz, that of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and of "all those who devote themselves to the spreading of Torah," in the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I express the wish that the brochah he granted will be fully realized. Hashem will open His treasures and grant to all those who cherish Torah, study it, teach it publicly among all our brethren, the children of Israel, life and brochah in abundance, beyond all limits.

With my brochah for success in your sacred mission and for all material and spiritual good,

M. Schneerson,
