Igrot Kodesh · Letter 109 — Hoshana Raba — Sweetening Severity into Revealed Kindness

I asked my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, and here is what he answered me:
"One beats the willow branches [1] to sweeten the Attributes of severity. When they are indeed sweetened, a great kindness is revealed and this takes the form of a visible and tangible good."
One can, perhaps, propose, in this regard, the following explanation:
A) A great kindness always results from a sweetened severity [2], as the Likkutei Torah explains.
B) The teaching of the Alter Rebbe enables one to establish the difference between an ordinary kindness and a great kindness, in the service of Hashem. The Likkutei Torah, in particular, establishes a connection between the great kindness and Aharon, the Kohen* [3].
C) The Likkutei Torah underlines that the great kindness systematically takes the form of a tangible good and that it is revealed here below by Aharon and his descendants, the Kohanim who raise their hands and bless the people.

ב) ממ"ש באגרת הקדש - לרבנו הזקן ס"י ובלקו"ת פרשה וד"ה בהעלותך הראשון (ס"ג ס"ו ובהביאור ס"א) יובן החילוק בין חסד סתם ובין רב חסד בעבודת האדם, ובלקו"ת שם מבואר דרב חסד שייך לאהרן הכהן.
ג) ע"פ מ"ש בלקו"ת פ' קרח ד"ה והנה פרח מטה אהרן מובן א) דע"י ורב חסד נמשך למטה ממש בטוב הנראה ב) דהמשכה זו ממשיכים "אהרן ומגזעו תחתיו הכהנים הנושאים את ידיהם ומברכים את העם בברכת כהנים".
