Igrot Kodesh · Letter 108 — Wedding as the Soul's Holy Descent — Chatunah and Nachut Darga

Volume 1 · Letter 108

By the grace of Hashem,

Tuesday of Parshat* Lech Lecha 5704,

To the remarkable young man, Rabbi Tzvi Shusterman,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to the invitation you sent me for your wedding, which will take place at a good and fruitful time. It reached me with delay.

I send you my blessing, a blessing of Mazel Tov*, Mazel Tov. You will build a Jewish home, based on the Torah and its profound teaching, as well as on the Mitzvot.

A connection can no doubt be made between the words Chatunah*, the wedding, Chatan*, the groom, and Nachut Darga*, one who descends a level, as our Sages say. It is explained, in various texts, and in particular in a letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, reproduced in the collection Hayom Yom, page 78, that the verse "when you walk on the road" alludes to the descent of the soul here below and its advancement in the world, until the age of old age.

This advancement must meet two characteristics. On one hand, it must allow one to go forward. On the other hand, it must indicate in which direction one should advance. But, concretely, advancement is obtained through the body. And the soul only indicates the right path to it.

Our Sages, to describe the soul and the body, give the image of a lame person [1] and a blind person [2]. The soul can compensate for the lack of the blind one and the body, for that of the lame one. The one and the other are also called man and woman. The union between them is possible in this world which, for this reason, is called Hillula*, "wedding," according to the expression of the Zohar*. Advancement results from this, the goal being to acquire the love and fear of Hashem, the wings [3], to put into practice the Torah and the Mitzvot.

Nevertheless, one might question what has just been said. In the Midrash, our Sages mention three things that are diminished by travel. On one hand, it reduces renown, that is, the number of Mitzvot one can accomplish. Furthermore, it impoverishes. Now, gold and silver allude to the love and fear of Hashem. Thus, even the perfect Tzaddik* will not succeed in attaching himself to Hashem here below as his soul did when it was above. Finally, travel reduces the number of children, which corresponds to a restriction of Torah study, to a decrease in the number of disciples. Indeed, the world raises various obstacles to the practice of Torah and Mitzvot.

This is how the Midrash interprets the blessing that the Holy One, blessed be He, granted to Avraham*, who symbolizes the Jewish soul. Hashem said to him "go from your land" and gave him the assurance that, in this way, he would acquire renown, be rich, and have children.

Indeed, a man endures, every day, the attacks of his evil inclination and, if Hashem did not come to his aid, he could not resist it. It is precisely the blessing that brings him this help. You will consult, in this regard, the Kuntres Umaayan 13:2 and 14:1, which expounds all these ideas.

Thus, it is only by entering a body that the soul can love Hashem "with all your might," that is, "with all your money." Similarly, the Mitzvot, corresponding to renown, are accomplished by means of material objects. And our Sages say: "Happy is the one who arrives here having acquired the Torah" which he studied precisely in this material world and which alludes to the birth of children.

These three points constitute the summit of elevation, in the advancement on the path of life. For the highest unification that can be realized with Hashem is possible thanks to the Torah and the Mitzvot. And the love and fear of Hashem are their wings, as the Tanya explains.

Nevertheless, the Mitzvot accomplish only the betrothal and the wedding itself is accomplished by the Torah, for which this world was created. Indeed, disorder must not reign in it and it must, on the contrary, be civilized [4].

When this advancement on the path of life takes place in a context of exile, one must know that Hashem is also present in this exile. Therefore, leaving it becomes the primary objective, which is possible thanks to Teshuvah. Thus, just as the descent into this world was vertiginous, the elevation can be equally so and what this means for the service of Hashem is quite clear. It is regarding this that it is said "flee, my beloved, and be like the deer" [5]. The Torah Or* explains all this very clearly.

With my blessing of Mazel Tov, of immediate Teshuvah and immediate redemption,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the executive committee [6]
