Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of Monday of Parshas Shelach, by which you inform me that the Canadian consul has issued you visas to settle in that country. I have already written to several of the chassidim* that, according to the news that reaches me from there and which you surely possess, it is not possible to earn one's livelihood easily there, any more than in the United States. On the other hand, possibilities exist in the countries of South America and in Australia. I am therefore surprised that no one is interested in those places, although it is not so easy to obtain a visa to settle there.

In any event, and whatever the place where you will settle yourself, may Hashem permit you to make a good journey, to establish yourself there in the manner which suits you best, materially and spiritually together.

You tell me that a match is being proposed for your daughter. You specify that the young man is named Avraham, like yourself[1]. However, this name is given to him only when he goes up to the Torah or when he signs a document.

If this union suits you in every respect, there is no place to cancel it solely on account of this. You will consult, in this regard, the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, section Even HaEzer, chapter 143, which say that in such a case, one cannot consider that a man and his son-in-law have the same first name. There is therefore nothing to fear[2]. You will also see the Piskei Dinim of the Tzemach Tzedek, on Yoreh Deah, volume 1, chapter 116.

[1] The question posed is therefore the following: May a man marry his daughter to someone who bears the same first name as himself? The daughter, in calling her husband, could give the impression that she is calling her father by his first name.

במענה על מכתבו מב' שלח המודיע אשר הקאנסול דקאנאדע מוכן ליתן להם וויזות לשם, הנה כבר כתבתי לאחדים מאנ"ש שעפ"י הידיעות שמתקבלים מקנדה ובטח גם יש אצלם ידיעות אלו, הנה ההסתדרות שם בעניני פרנסה וכן כאן באה"ב אינו בנקל כ"כ, משא"כ במדינות דרום אמעריקא או באוסטראליע, ולכן פלא קצת מה שאין מתענינים בהעתקה לשם, אף שהשגת הוויזה לשם היא אינה בנקל כ"כ, ובכל אופן לאיזה מקום שיעתיק יתן השי"ת ותהי' נסיעתם כשורה ויסתדרו שם באופן המתאים לפניהם בגשמיות וברוחניוות גם יחד.

בענין שאלתו במה שמציעים נכבדות לבתו מרת... תחי' ושאלתו מכיון ששם המדובר הוא אברהם ושמו הוא..., אבל בשם אברהם משתמש רק בעלותו לתורה ובחתימה לבד, הנה מכיון ששאר הענינים מתאימים אין צ"ל מניעה מצד זה (יעויין בשו"ת צ"צ (חלק אהע"ז סימן קמ"ג) שבנדון כזה אין זה כלל שמותיהם שוים ואין מקום לחשוש (ועיין ג"כ פסקי דינים להצ"צ ליו"ד ח"א סי' קטז)).
