B'ezras Hashem,
27 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I received in due time your letter, accompanied by a request for a brochah for your son. It is difficult for me to read it as it stands[1], for you say that you accept the sufferings to which you might possibly have been condemned, chas v'shalom*. Obviously, this formulation is not exact and has no place.
You affirm, first of all, that you are requesting great mercy[2]. Now, this has the effect of removing sufferings. There is therefore no place to conduct all those discussions tending to determine who is guilty and who will be punished in his stead. Consequently, I will read your request for a brochah while omitting these few lines.
May Hashem grant that you may soon give me good news of your son. You will inform me that his situation is better, and if a supernatural intervention is necessary for that, this is not impossible for Hashem. Who could dictate to Him His conduct? Moreover, a natural possibility also exists. He has been in prison for some time already. Certainly, a verdict has been rendered, but when the justice is not just, this verdict has no value. Moreover, we invoke Divine mercy, and all these calculations will therefore be useless.
You speak to me of your settling in Brazil and you ask me how to obtain the documents necessary for immigrating to that country. From what I know, an experienced shochet* will be particularly sought there, especially in the capital, Rio de Janeiro.
You will surely find, at our office for refugee aid[3] in Paris, the address of Rav Zinerovitch, who resides there. He is a well-to-do merchant, but, on an honorary basis, he also assumes the functions of Rav. It would be good to address yourself to him.
Awaiting your good news,
Notes
[1] At the tziyun* of the Frierdiker Rebbe.
[2] These are the words with which a request for a brochah traditionally begins.
[3] Of Rav Binyamin Gorodetski.
